    Coleman bag to UQ/TQ

I have a 25y/o Coleman poly (I think) sleeping bag. I was thinking of making it into a TQ or UQ but the pack size is so **** BIG! I was wondering if it would be possible or even worth while to take some of the stuffing out to lessen the bulk...? I’d like to save the $$ on buying a new/good one.
    Any ideas...?

Oh, and I’m buying (possibly this weekend, REI is having a sale) an REI Lumen 25degree regular length bag for $140. And then if I need it a 15degree silk back liner. Would this be a decent set up for 4 season?

I don't see you successfully unstuffing an old and really heavy bag... You can get cheap bags for less than $20 that you could convert, but again, packability is a question... (weight, too!)

You'd be better of finding an old Down bag on ebay.. (I paid $45 for mine..) I washed it, hacked it into a 2lb top quilt:

RE: Your setup... You'll need an underquilt or pad. 4-season is questionable... unless 25-degrees is the lowest you're looking to go... I don't see how a hacked Coleman bag will take you down to below freezing as an UQ... You'll need a wide pad, or good UQ.

If you're backpacking, figure out a pad setup that works if money is tight... DL hammock and a pad work for many folks here.

TYVM I forgot to mention I have the REI Trekker 3/4 pad. Is it one or the other or should I have both pad and UQ?
I will check on ebay now... that’s a great idea!

    RBW,

    JohnSawyer's advice is good.

If you have $140, I would spend a bit more cash and and pick up a great TQ. Sales are just starting and there's always a deal in the For Sale forum. Save weight and get better quality!

    Good luck.
