my take- in a 4 season tarp, it makes sense to make the bottom edges straight. this allows the botom edge to be brought down close to dirt level to block the wind in that 4th season. this is my reasoning, flawled as it may be

Getting to this post a little late, but I thought I'd show the the cat cut hung for others to see. If you are using a tarp for winter use (ie wind) every bit counts, but these photos will show how much the cat cut takes off. Look at the squares. If it is for rain that you are concerned about, the HG cuben has plenty of coverage. I had two hammocks hung underneath it in the rain with no problem. On the shadowed one the tarp was not pitched tight.
