The allure of a cuben tarp (HG - cat cuts?)

A cuben fiber tarp is calling me. I've been perfectly happy with my BMJ in spinn, but gear lust has taken over me. I think I've settled on the HG four season cuben tarp. I'll have to unload the spinn tarp, but I think it will be worth it. What I can't decide on is whether to have it with the cat cuts or not. I know stormcrow thinks it helps, but I like the idea of a little more coverage on the long ends (without cat cuts). For those of you that have the tarp, what do you think? Cat cuts...or not?

That's a toughie. Some say yes you need them others say no you dont need um. I currently own a z-packs cuben rectangle tarp no cat cuts and really like it. I do however have a HG cuben tarp with cat cuts on order. I am very very curious to see which one gets the tighter better pitch. They may pitch equally as well for all I know. So as of now its a matter of preference. That probably does not help much but your probably here opinions on why to get them and why not to get them. I dont have an opinion as of yet cause I have not had a chance to test both of them. Once I get my HG tarp and get some testing done and comparisons done between the HG and Z-Packs ill hopefully have some more definitive answers on cat cut vs no cat cut on cuben tarp. Dont know if that helps or not but regardless youll get an excellent tarp from Hammock Gear.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

my vote: i'd say go for the extra coverage. all the times (so far) i have used the Zpacks cuben, it has pitched drum-tight. cuben wont sag when wet.

I'd go with a compromise of very shallow cat cuts.

    can't decide

I keep going back and forth on it. I may have to just call Adam and talk to him about it.

I have a Zpacks rectangle tarp and I have no problem getting a tight pitch. I just received the Zpacks hammock tarp with doors and it also pitches tight.

A cat cut on the ridgeline will help in my experience with silnylon.

Very interesting topic... Can't wait to hear everyone's results of "out in the field" experiences.

I had cat cuts on my winter silnylon tarp. I also had a winter silnylon tarp without the cat cuts, so I was able to compair them side by side. The tarp with the cat cuts was easier to get a tight pitch with. And it stayed tight in heavy rain and blowing wind. So when I decided to make my cuban tarp, I debated on how I wanted it. I ended up adding a very conservative cat cut to the longer low edge on each side of the tarp. I'm still in test mode with this tarp but so far, it's working out very well. Oh, this is a hybrid tarp; made with two different material (cuban and silnylon) and I'm dealing with those two materials wanting to hang differently from each other. (silnylon wants to stretch a bit while the cuban doesn't at all)

Thanks for all the input! After talking with Adam and thinking about it, I decided to go without cat cuts.

Getting to this post a little late, but I thought I'd show the the cat cut hung for others to see. If you are using a tarp for winter use (ie wind) every bit counts, but these photos will show how much the cat cut takes off. Look at the squares. If it is for rain that you are concerned about, the HG cuben has plenty of coverage. I had two hammocks hung underneath it in the rain with no problem. On the shadowed one the tarp was not pitched tight.
