    hanging in the smokies?

Just wondering, what is the official policy about hammock use in GSMNP? Are you allowed to hang at shelters? (or in the vacinity?)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Technically you are only allowed to setup if the shelter is full. Otherwise it's fine.

As I understand it, I think you're talking in regard to the AT through the Smokies. If so, then you are required to have a reservation and stay in a shelter unless you are a thru hiker. The park defines a thru hiker as someone who started the trail 50 miles before entering the park and will continue on for 50 miles after leaving the park. If you are a thru hiker, you have to stay in a shelter if space is available, but this can be avoided by dawdling around and allowing others to take the shelter space ahead of you.

personally I would avoid the shelters. There are a lot of campsites that don't require 30 days in advance reservations
There are times that the only way you can do something is alone that waiting on the convenience of others means that a lot of opportunities will pass you by
