    Sgt. Rock,

I'm curious about the mosquitos too. Are they bad all across the PCT or just portions? Why wouldn't a bug sock work? When I lived in Virginia, this was the route I went when I thought the mosquitos were so bad I couldn't stand it. I also wanted a "go-to-ground" option and with the right tie-outs, the bug sock converted nicely into a bug bivy. I have some photos that I'll post. I bet you could lose a lot more weight with the sock. I'm curious why else you would need such a spacious enclosure.

Hammock Bug Net and Ground Bivy

Well, that was an adventure down memory lane. Some of my earliest hammock experiments back in 2007 and 2008!

This is one early bug sock I made. I later added side pull-outs to keep the sock off the side and to work when I used it as a bug bivy on the ground.

Just sections - like the Sierras and the states of Washington and Oregon. I think it is only about 1600 miles of it or so. There is a section of the video where they are all covered completely up with clothing after a hard day of hiking, and the skeeters are covering the head nets trying to get at them. He has another where he is alone and it looks about the same. It reminds me of videos from Alaska when it is summer and the mosquitoes swarm, something like this:
    or this

A sock could work if all I wanted to do was sleep in the enclosure. I already have a sock that weighs 1.63oz. I'm thinking about being able to sit up, cook, and do whatever I want to with nothing on but a smile if I want to.

Near idea Rock. I envision more of a bug skirt hanging from the edges of the tarp down to the ground like those for some single wall 'mids (see pic below from Mountain Laurel Designs Speedmid). Shorter amount on the sides and longer on the ends to hang to the ground, perhaps to be staked down to prevent blowing in the wind. Wouldn't allow for porch mode so much (unless you made the netting extra long on one side), but would enclose the area under the tarp and be floorless.

I'm planning to go out and get some pictures of the thing in the daylight with a couple of small modifications I made last night. But right now I'm dealing with server issues for my site.

first love your ideas.. being from Fla I deal with mosquitoes all the time .. I'm currently working on a design that the netting attaches to the tarp instead of surrounding the hammock thus allowing you to task under your tarp bug free instead of the only refuge from the pests while in the hammock only ...

Your prototype looks GREAT, Sarge! This is a super idea! I think you've really got something there!

I've been working to fix a website issue and home network issues today. But sometime during all that I had time to make a quick video about the status of the project:
