Anyone play around with making a Bug Hut?

I was watching Jester's Team Bad Wizzard on the PCT video and saw how miserable the skeeters could be out there. I got to thinking a solution would be to make something like the ID Bug Tent http://www.integraldesigns.com/produ...TOKEN=23209628 except made out of nanoseeum net and set up so one could use it with a hammock tarp over it when rain cover is needed, or as just a bug shelter when it isn't. I've done some math and think I could make something like this for a solo hammock at about 8.5 ounces.

I figure someone must have already played with this since it seems like so simple an idea. The Hammock Bliss Sky tent is sort of that, but much heavier and less rain protection.

    Permethrin.?

The design can work but it will be a lot of skeeter net
Varying terrain will need to be taken into account for the overall height.

Prussiks and mitten hooks work for attachment to the ridgeline.

This one was for ground use and is similar to many tarp-tent designs.
Doing a full net room under a tarp and around a hammock will be cumbersome.

Something like this could work with a few small mods.

Somewhere there is another manufactured netted hammock room..I just cant find the pic.
    Ahhah!
    I found it

Grand Trunk makes this I believe.

I hear ya. I spent a few years living in Louisiana, the skeeters will haul you away by the 1/2 gram. Watching Jester's video the swarms of skeeters hanging onto them whenever they stopped in those areas actually looked worse than many of my experiences with skeeters in La. It reminded me more of the flies in Iraq and how they could swarm you.

The top one looks sort of like what I was envisioning. The picture of the Grand Trunk gives me an idea about the ridge though. The two lower ones in white are way bigger than I am thinking of making. My idea is something that will give adequate coverage around the hammock when sleeping, but a big enough space to sit upright under it if I am sitting sideways in the hammock as a lounge chair in camp.

At 0.7oz per square yard, and going minimal for my minimal hammock and tarp, I think I can keep the weight below 9 ounces. I may get some tulle later and make a concept bug hut out of it.

One thing that comes to mind (I think it's been talked about before here) is something made kinda like the Ray Way "Tarp Tent", were the noseeum is sewn right to the tarp.
The sides would be no problem. An extra seam could be added to the tarp (parallel to the ridgeline) that the bug net is sewn to.
The sides could be sewn far enough from the center so that if there was ever a leak/drip, it would miss the hammock.

But The ends would be different.
You would either need to run the netting all the way to the ends of the tarp or sew it to the tarp 90 degrees to the ridgeline.

Or, the netting could be sewn (or just attached by mini biners) to the ridgeline & let it hang against the hammock.
    Just a couple thoughts.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Mosquitoes love me so much that I've pretty much given up on summer camping/hiking. Sometimes, if the wind is blowing, I can get into my hammock without any mosquitoes coming in. But for the most part, I atrract a cast of thousands of mosquitoes. I hate DEET and just about any other repellent because I have to spray it all over me. If I miss an ear lobe, I will get twenty bites on that ear lobe.

This summer my big toe ended up resting against the bug net when I fell asleep. I got seven bites on that one toe, and my foot swelled up like crazy. That soured me on summer camping. The mosquitoes have won.

I mentioned it. I have one, but it is heavy, and the tarp doesn't cover enough IMO. I'm thinking of something that could be set up without the tarp if the user so desired because, as I hear, PCT thru0-hikers can generally count all the times they needed protection from rain on their fingers and still have a few fingers left over. But the skeeters on the other hand....

SlvrSurfr, don't spray that stuff on you...half is overspray that ends up god knows where...you end up paying for product that you don't use, and as you have noted, you miss spots. Instead, spray it on the palm of your hand, and rub it on...full coverage, no waste, and as environmentally responsible as it is possible to be with DEET.

    Apologies for the hijack.
