What makes a successful hammock camping trip?

Just for fun and out of interest, how would you order the following criteria in terms of importance for a memorable trip?

    • Location
    • Weather
    • New Experiences
    • Company
    • Food quality
    • Distance to trailhead from home
    • Firewood
    • Natural protection from the elements
    • Exploring options
    • Flora and fauna
    • Ease/Difficulty of terrain
    • Cell phone coverage
    • Foul weather bail out options

    Just curious

For me I like to take the good with the bad. Crap weather, rough terrain, miles from anywhere, tired food all pale to some fun, new experiences and great company!

Of that list, this would be my order:

    New experiences
    Exploring options
    Location
    Flora and fauna
    Weather
    Natural protection from the elements
    Company
    Firewood
    Food quality
    Ease/Difficulty of terrain
    Foul weather bail-out options
    Cell phone coverage
    Trust nobody!

Pretty simple for me, did I have fun or at least get a good story and no major (at least permanent) injury? If so, then it was a success.

For me it's all about the experience..
A close second would be the food. A roasted potato and a open flamed grilled steak sure makes me feel better then any freeze dried meal ever will. I do not mind packing the extra weight to have a great meal.

Just being able to get out and get away is good enough for me.

But to make it an epic/enjoyable I would have to say killer views with alpine mountains and lakes, and coffee in the morning from my hammock.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

As I read each reply above, I think, yeah, that's me. The bottom line though is if I am able to get out and get away, either solo or with a few people I like, it's a successful trip.

Memorable, now there's a whole new response.

If I can get out with a friend or 2, not freeze and make it back safe its a great trip.
Weather and the such can all be fixed with good gear.

My priorities for a fun trip are as follows:

    • Enough time to enjoy the trail (a minimum of two days).
    • Enough excersize to ensure that I feel as if I've actually gone somewhere; figure 30-40 miles on the bike per day or 10-15 miles on foot per day.
    • Good food. Note that this can be freeze-dried, as long as it's still tasty.
    • Something to see. I'd always prefer to see something new on the trail.

Everything else is secondary. Good company is a plus, but not needed for me to have a good time.
