    Boy Scouts and hammocks

i work at a scout camp during the summer and at the beginning of the summer i was the only one with a hammock. during staff week a couple of the other staffers commented that that i carried my hammock with me wherever i went, i told them that its comfortable and fast relaxation. the next week 3 others had gone out and bought their own. by the end of the summer there was a group of 15 staffers that all had hammocks and set them up whenever we had the chance!! it was amazing seeing scouts come up to us and ask us questions after the days program ended for the day. but the coolest part was half way through the summer the trading post had ordered hammocks and was selling them like hotcakes!!

I had the same thing happen to me at summer camp about three years ago. I had bought a travel hammock for about $20 at the trading post on the first day of camp. I had it set up that afternoon and every time I had to get out of it there was one of my scouts getting comfy. After a few days of shooing scouts out of my hammock and hearing them wine about not having any money left (the spent it on candy and soda) when I told them to get their own parents night finally happens. All of a sudden a hammock explosion happened in camp and I was one happy ASM (me).
Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.

I was on wood badge staff this summer and I set up my hammock instead of sleeping a cabin with a bunk mate. It rained both weekends and all my stuff was under my tarp and stayed dry. I got allot of questions about it from both staff and participants. One of the Beavers brought his speer DIY.
In my troop theres about 6 of us now. We're going to camp Tahquitz this year we'll se how meny will be hanging by then. One of our boys got rid of his bed and sleeps in his ENO Dble full time.
Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course.

My sons and I are the first Hammockers in our troop. We hope to get some followers. While not an ultralight troop by any means, we have been working to apply our ultralight gleanings and learnin' to our regular and backpacking camping. It has helped out our troop alot. I am hoping that some will catch onto the hammock idea and enjoy learning a new skill and way to camp. My son is the Leave No Trace Instructor for the troop and has looked at how to push some in the hammock area showing its benefits as lower impact.

I became a scoutmaster a year ago and on my first hike with the boys I used my eno hammock. Our varsity coach is also a hammock guy. TuckE on here. He had a HH and since has shown me the way of the HH. We did a project with our boys and made hammocks and whoopies and we are going on a hike at the end of this month.

Does my heart good. I love the scouts. It's a great program. Keep teaching them.

I've got about 3 month to try to learn more so when my son crosses over into Boy Scouts and I follow as an Asst Scoutmaster, I can try to "enlighten" the boys to a new camping experience.

Great stories y’all! I miss the scouts very much! I don’t have any kids so I’m not involved anymore. I do support my old Troop by eating as much spaghetti as I can at their Spaghetti Dinner every March!

This past summer at Camp Raven Knob NC, they even mentioned that hammocks were OK in their leader's guide. Most of the staff for their Rampage HA program took hammocks with them for the week.

My son and I have been setting the example for our troop with our hammocks.
I've been in mine in 19 F degree winter waether. (Need to offset the example set by the Scoutmaster with his huge tent, blow-up bed and heater!)
