    Part Success UQ

So parents had an old down comforter they weren't using
It was large enough to make into 2 UQs.
I sewed two seams down the middle, so I could cut it in half without being tickled to death with feathers.
Then I sewed ripstop on the bottom of one side (not exactly sure why, probably because I had it). Sewed gross grain along both long sides for the shock cord. Remember, I am making two, so I had to sew 4 channels total. After the first one I got a little smarter and used some mason line inside the channel so I can pull the cord through when I find some. The first channel, well, I didn't think about that, so I had to use my fish tape to get the mason line through it.

Both came out pretty nice...I'll get some photos up when the sun is out.

But I say partial success because...there is no way both together will get me down to 0*. There just isn't enough loft in it. But they will make perfect spring/fall UQs.

Now, if I only still had that LL Bean comforter I loaned to my sister about 15 years ago!

Sounds like that was a great DIY score for you. Would like to see some pics when you have them.

sounds great. I'm lookin into getting an old down comforter or jackets and gutting them to make an underquilt. Just not sure about loft and quality I'll find in the thrift stores.

How wide did you make the UQ? I have an old king size down comforter and a couple of down pillows (btw down pillows are horrible compared to feather ones) so I was thinking of using these to make my own UQ. I like you idea of adding ripstop to the bottom because it would allow me to roll it up and not have the cotton cover exposed.

yeah some waterproof Ripstop on the bottom would keep the spray off the material. Of course, just covering the cotton still leaves the extra weight.

I cut my Queen size quilt in half, and made two. I don't think it is either high quality down or down at all..so far, all of the feathers that have come out look like, well, feathers. The stiff type feathers, not the fluffy down part. This is turning into a larger epic fail for me...the UQ might be ok for the late Spring or early Fall, but I doubt it would get me down (no pun intended) to anything much below 50*.
Back to the UQ drawing board.
