VIDEO: Gear Talk - WIMP - Sleep System

I had some folks ask me for a video of what I carry in my pack. While I was going through and setting up my winter stuff, I figured that it might be a good time.

I look forward to hearing any comments, questions or suggestions. I've gotten a lot from videos that folks have posted in the past and hope that someone gets something from mine.

Looks great! just a questino on the extra IX layer for the UQ... any idea on how much extra temp range that one layer of IX will give you when you add it to the shamu? I might think about making a layer to add to my down UQ to make it as modular as possible.

That's a very individual answer, but I would say 5-10 degrees for the additional layer.

Unfortunately, I can't give you a really good personal experience answer because I had a number of issues with my Shamu when I first got it. When I first had it, I tended to get a number of drafts between my quilt and hammock which caused me to get cold regardless of the number of layers. Because of that, I decided to get the JRB underquilt to give down a try. Really loved that!

Shortly after I did that, Mac came up with the end channel modification to the Shamu which allowed the UQ to cinch up tighter to the hammock - eliminating drafts. Figuring that I had nothing to lose, I sewed end channels onto my UQ, and also decided to sew on the foot and shoulder lifters that I got from my JRB UQ.

All that said to say that I now love my Shamu in warmer temps. I know that I am definitely comfortable with just the Shamu (no additional layer) into the mid-50's now and could probably go lower. With the additional layer, I could probably go to 45 or so, and I tend to be a colder sleeper. It's just that if I'm expecting the temps to be low, I take the down TQ/UQ in case the temps drop even further. The most likely scenario for testing the Shamu further will be an expected moderate night that goes unexpectedly cold. . .
