There's some great info in this thread but I think what I'm going to walk away from it with is that Shug isn't a cuddler!

I use a 3/4 UQ with a 1/8" GG Thinlite pad for my legs. I use this pad as the back support in my pack (ULA Ohm). Its not much, but I could use it if I needed it.

I spent years on the ground without a pad, I know what to look for (leaves, grass) that I can lay on. Another reason I chose to go to hammocks is that I leave behind such a small footprint when I leave a camp.

I plan ahead pretty well for my trips, but I'm not saying my plans are perfect. All in all, I'd keep hiking until I found a good spot. Though I do have to keep my water sources in mind too.

If absolutely needed, I can set up my Hennessy like in the video above, using my GI surplus poncho as a ground sheet and my blue CCF sit pad as a sleeping pad. Or, if it's January and the bugs aren't out (not very likely), I can simply set up the tarp and do the same.

Still, I've yet to hike anywhere where trees are that thin on the ground. Maybe I'll wind up in that position at some point, but hopefully not soon.
