Can a hammock be too long?

I just whipped up a new hammock with 1.1oz ripstop I got from DIYgearsupply.
It's nothing fancy. Just hemmed the edges and whipped the ends.
I'm 6'5" and have previously used hammocks that were uncomfortably short so as an experiment I made this one extra long. Unhemmed, the fabric is 12' long.
I will most likely trim this down at some point but I just wanted to see what it was like. You can always trim fabric but you can't add it back!

I was just curious whether a hammock can be too long purely from a comfort perspective. I realize that there are other issues like tarp coverage to worry about when using a long hammock but is there a point when a hammock becomes uncomfortable due to its length?

Comfort wise...I don't think so. I cut my personal hammocks at 12 fet and I'm closer to 5'7". Tarp coverage can get a bit tougher depending on the pitch, but I like to be able to stretch way out if I feel like it.

Agree with Paul. Bigger gives me a flatter lay personally (however, I am not your height). The trouble does tend to come more from finding proper coverage.

I've made hammocks 12' long and found them uncomfortable, so I shortened them. However, I'm 5' 7" tall, so your YMMV (and likely will). With a gathered end hammock you can shorten it without cutting or sewing, so experiment!

I recently made a 12-foot hammock and had to cut it down to a little over 10 feet. Not that it was uncomfortable; it was just that I couldn't get the suspension straps high enough up on the trees to hang it! That doesn't seem like it'll be a problem for you! We seem to have quite a few 6-foot+ members here. Let us know how you like it!

I got the same results as WV so I turned it into a bridge hammock.

i'm 6' and my diy is about 12ft long i think. Maybe a little shorter. I find it fine at that length, however, i've probably whipped the ends about 6 times each to get the right feel. I would love to find some realy wide nylon, like 64+ wide, for my next hammock. I'm thinkin wider the hammock, the more diaganal i'll be able to lay, the shorter i'll be able to make it, the less monsterous the tarp i'll need to cover it all...

Diy Gear Supply... 64" Wide, $3.20/yd...

He had some 1.1 camo that was 68" wide... I don't see it on his store now...

    Great stuff..

I have made hammocks that are 9', 10' and 11'.. I love my 11'-er... It's a bit heavier than I want for backpacking, but it's really comfortable. The only downside to the length, it it makes Triangle Thingies a necessity!

That's exactly what I'm using. It's definitely nice fabric and a good price too.

That is some really wide fabric! I might have to order some of that for the next one.

I agree with you. I have a 12' DIY that's 60 inches wide. I'd like one 72 inches wide (then I might go down to 11')
