"well, i would try them out but i do not currently have my hammock (depressing) it was sent back to HH for replacement (snapped ridgle line)"

I feel sure that at the time it matters you will be able to try it (since, not having the hammock, it does not matter).

Not needed at all, but very nice IMO. I like to tie them out pretty tight and, if possible, to a tree or something a bit off the ground rather than to ground stakes or roots. Because when the hammock sags after you get in, and you approach the ground they will loosen a bit, especially if if tied to the ground.

When I have them nice and tight it feels pretty wide open in there, with lots of room to the left of my shoulder and the net far from my face. If they are loose or not connected at all, the net will really "bug" me. Particularly if big buzzing mosquitoes are on the other side of that net, a millimeter from my skin.

But, strictly optional, what ever turns you on. It will get the job done either way. Some might prefer being able to "rock/swing" more without them, for example.
