    Which WB blackbird to get?

So I'm in the market for a new hammock. I'm thru-hiking the A.T. starting mid-march of next year. I'm considering a warbonnet blackbird but I can't decide which one to get. I want lightweight, but I will be sleeping on a thermarest inflatable pad. I've narrowed it down to the 1.1 oz fabric, so basically i'm deciding between the single or double layer. Does the double layer make all that much difference? When I slept in my old hennessey hammock with a sleeping pad (and ccf foam ad across the shoulders) I really didn't have many problems falling off my sleeping pad. I guess my question is this: Does the double layer make the hammock warmer or is it just convenient to put your sleeping pad in the lower layer. I know its only a 3oz difference, but every ounce counts.

Some ounces count more than others.

I have no experience with using a pad in a hammock, though. Perhaps others will chime in.

It does hold a pad in place better, as well as any extra clothes you want to use as insulation below. The double layer is excellent bug protection.

I agree with the bug protection comment. However, usually your pad or UQ does most of this work. I went with a dbl after speaking with Brandon and looking for added durability. But many, many members who watch their oz have went with a single and have had no issues.

I'm pro double layer just for the bug protection. I do like putting pads between the layers as well as they stay in place better for me.

My first BB was the 1.7DL but in an attempt to shed a few more grams I switched to the 1.1SL.
I only use underquilts with the hammock so the second layer was redundant really, a nice to have for storage but that was all.

    Blackbird

Depends on how tight you count your grams...
I have the Blackbird 1.1 Dbl. I love it. And it does hold the pad better.
We need the big protection up here in the NW.. and there is a nice little ribbon tie that allows for the bug net to be pulled out of the way when not needed.

So, yes - it does make it slightly warmer. Which also means hotter when it's muggy. It adds an extra layer for bug bites from underneath; however, if you check past posts, it's exceedingly rare that anyone claims a bug bite from the bottom either.

As far as using with a pad, when I used my thermarests in my ENO's, I'd wake up in the night with a cold shoulder. I'd slip off my pad a little (helps too if you do not fill it all the way - maybe half full?). With the double layer WBBB's, I've found that the pad does not move - the tension between the layers hold it in place much better.

All of that said, after a season of inflatable pads & one with UQ's (which I didn't get all the 'hype' or why pay so much for an extra simple 'sleeping bag'), I'd definitely opt for an UQ for your thru hike. Its actually a world of difference to me.
