    Sewn thru baffles tend to create cold spots because the loft is restricted at the seam lines. With offset baffles the loft can remain constant across the quilt.

    Don't overstuff them too much or you will defeat your purposes. If you overstuff them too severely you self compress the insulation. Not a good thing.
    I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    yeah, I think you nailed it. I dont believe you can realistically reach 30° with a sewn 'thru baffle.
    It would be pointless, it seems, to have anything more than a 1.5" loft if you have shells sewn together. That will give a fair rating of 40° alone. You could push it down to 30 with a bunch of clothing layers.

    i have made this a few times in my head, and the one thing that is "baffling" me is how did you calculate how much down to add to each chamber? i am sure it is simple, but i can't figure it out. is it a simple volume? chamber length x width x height?

    and another, what was your source of down?
    i know, eider geese, plucked from their breasts...

    thanks!

    chamber LxHxW / 800
    I calculated the first 2 chambers and then when a remainder was left I subtracted in sequence. It was perfectly even as the baffles decreased in size.
    for overstuff, (I added more later) but primarily put in about 10% more down per chamber

    of course, this is much easier with a rectangle quilt... lets say you have a baffle 48x6x2" high. 576cu in./800=.72oz + 10% overfill is ~.8 ounce
    what the heck, lets make it nice and fat and do 1 ounce per chamber.
    if your quilt is 7' long, you will need 14 ounces and that will likely give you about a 3 to 3.25" loft
    now we're talking 25°

    down can be purchased from Thru-Hiker.com or Speerhammocks.com
    i have used both, and found the quality to be similar

    I'd just like to bump this thread and say 'Thanks Again' to mikeinfhaz for posting the directions! It's worthy of a sticky, and it has been made so...

    thanks to everybody who has enjoyed the post. I want to extend a public invitation to bug, pester, poke and prod me for any questions, ideas, or input you have to add or what you may have gathered from the directions herein.

    as always, the evolution of design warrants updated tips and tricks so of course there are new ways and easier ways of doing some of the steps required to make a completed quilt.

    peace and warm fuzzies!

    Very nice job, Mike. Welcome to the DIY quilt crowd. It's quite satisfying to be able to look at the finished product and know that you made it yourself.

    very very nice job on your quilt, not sure if I understood you right about did you make one quilt that was overstuffed or did you make two, a summer and a winter???
    The only thing I would add is this that I got from thru-hiker for figuring out the temp ratings of your quilt:
    this is for a baffled quilt and this is what the height of the baffles does to the quilt:
    1.5" baffle = 40 degree quilt
    2" = 30
    2.5" = 20
    3.25" = 10
    4" = 0

    And the formula for figuring out how many oz to put in each baffle:
    L x W x H / fill power of your down = # oz
    length x width (you can measure these indiviually if your quilt has different ones)
    H will be from the above list and you will cut the no-see-um at least 1" wider for you to sew this to the upper and lower quilt material
    and fill power, plug in the # that your given for the down you bought

    reguarding fill power: the higher the # the less down you will use per baffled chamber so try to find at least above 700
    and one more hint: add about 10% to whatever amount you come up with due to down having a mind of it's own and flying off somewhere while you're trying to stuff your quilt!!

    Detailed instructions! Everything made sense to me, but one thing... I'll have the wife explain it to me. LOL
