Does the baffle cut length need to be the same as the inner shell cut width, or should the baffles be cut to the desired finished width of the quilt?

Awesome thread, i am also going to pull the trigger on this project and was wondering if you got the down in bulk or extracted from a down pillow etc, how you measured out exact amounts of down per baffle. Also, Israelius i was curious what type of material you used for your TQ. Thanks

I got my down from wilderness logics. It comes in one ounce bags, so it is really convenient. Measuring is difficult, I ended up doing rough math (number of baffles divided by number of bags of down) and then just eyeballed it. I was at about a half ounce/bag per baffle. You can weigh it but it is really hard to transfer around so the more you move it (bag to scale to quilt) the more of a hassle it is.

The material I used is the .67 argon from dutchware. I was going for ultralight. I wouldn't recommend that material though as it is extremely thin and difficult to work with, as well as it is not completely down proof (despite claiming to be). The next thicker argon, .9 I think, would probably be better and only add an ounce or two to the overall weight.

Also, some advice: really think through your plan on how to sew the end of the baffles. I'm not sure of the best practice, but it will stop you in your tracks of you haven't planned it out. I just cut my baffles long and sewed over the ends and then trimmed off the excess. Seemed to work fine for me.

I was given a giant 4lb down bag that has been my sole source to stuff my UQ and TQ.
My method isn't the most desirable, but it works for me. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...chmentid=81461
I cut a baffle on the old bag, and stuff the down into the tube. Weigh the tube and relocate down into new quilt baffle. I do this until I have reached the prescribed weight for each baffle. Then, sew it up. Yes, down is everywhere (including in my beard ) and there are much more efficient ways of stuffing your gear, but with the source I have, I don't know of another way that wouldn't be any more messy. Minus the blood, I seriously look like I've been on a goose hunt that took place inside a 10'x10' shed.

    So - I googled as I am
Getting more into DIY and found this wonderful thread! Thanks to all - I'll be early 2017 tarting this project

It sounds crazy but my plan is to meke my small kids down tq's that will get them to perhaps like maybe age 10 or so then make ones that will be more adult sized.

Or make one adult sized and just tie off the excess length and adjust as they grow - I'm sick or the synthetic bags

For starters though I plan a 20 degree adult sized TW for. Ya elf

the part i'm most curious about when working with baffles is how do you maneuver the material when sewing the top shell onto the baffles?
