Pips, just saw this thread and want to say sorry you're having trouble with the straps! I've never had them not hold any knot, even when new, but I'll agree that after you've been hanging with them a couple of times they do hold the spike hitch better than the very first run. I've found that when you are rigging the straps up and tying your knots if you really crank down on them before you try to hang the hammock they will hold the knot. They just need some persuasion the first couple of times.

Sounds like these guys have also given you some good suggestions. If you keep having problems with them I will send you a set in a different webbing, just let me know.

Ever try to hang from a pair of smooth metal poles?

I say: Live with it; try to find a way to wrap and cinch to reduce slipping. Or back wrap. Pulling tightly to barely stretch the strap and then putting a wrap on that may help. As someone who regularly cheats and uses adjustment of the location to tune the length, I'm familiar with variation between trees in the ease with which this is easy or hard. Polyprope stapping is always easier....and it degrades through tearingand abrasion more rapidly than fully speced seat-belt webbing.

But, there's nothing wrong with the strap, and I wouldn't think to abrade it in order to make wrapping easier. I wouldn't think to deliberately abrade Dyneema or any other line, and Dyneema is far more slippery.

Thanks, brother! I think the straps are super strong, well made and nice-looking. I think one or more of the ideas posted here will help me adjust my techniques!

I agree. I'm not going to abrade my brand new tree straps with sandpaper, dirt or anything else. Thanks again guys!

Yes...that's my basement setup. I just wrap the straps twice around the poles and have no problems.

Maybe a few nails would do the trick.

But seriously, it sounds like they may be a bit too stiff to cinch down tight. Maybe a few washings with fabric softener and machine drying. The tumble of the dryer is said to soften fabrics. It works on poly work pants.

Just to be clear, my issue isn't that the straps slide down the tree trunk (like a smooth metal pole), my issue is that they slip on themselves. In other words, I run the tag end through the loop, pull tight, and it just slackens immediately. It won't stay tight until I get some weight on it.

I tried feeding the tag end through the loop, then making a half hitch back on itself. That works, but is problematic because it's difficult to make adjustments. You have to loosen the half hitch, hold it open, move the strap, then--while keeping tension on the strap--pull the half hitch tight.

Then, I tried whipping some small diameter poly cord around the loop to make it scratchier. It works, but it's fussy (makes the loop a lot smaller.) I also tried taking some pine sap and rubbing it on the INSIDE of the loop. That also works, but messy.

It occurred to me that Dutch clips would solve the problem... .

Anyway, maybe it's a tempest in a teacup. Thanks again for everyone's ideas.

If the loop in the strap is big enough, form a larkshead and run the tag end of strap thru the larkshead. When you pull it tight it should stay.

I did not read the entire thread so not sure if this has been suggested already.

That's the best idea yet! Thanks, brother!

"Paint" the inside of the end loop(s) with Plasti-dip. Believe it or not, it really works well on fabrics like nylon and poly. I coat the bottoms of my bags and backpacks with it...non skid and waterproof. I can't image it would affect the integrity of the strap....testing in a safe place may be wise just in case.

The surface will be very "rubbery" which should give you the traction you seek.

Yep--that works great, sacrificing very little length. The only qualm I have about this system is that the seam of the loop gets mixed up in the lark's head, making it somewhat cumbersome to loosen, especially after there's been some weight on it. But, otherwise, just the ticket. Tightens around the tree with just a tug and stays there. Thanks, again, Hangnout!

Now, there's another good idea. I might try that. I'll let you know how it turns out. (have to go to the hardware store to get Plasti-dip.) Thanks for the input, CD!!!
