Why use a carabiner vs a loop of webbing?

New member getting my first system put together. Working on my tree straps and wonder I what the reason is to use a carabiner or other hardware to connect the webbing vs just running the webbing through the loop directly. Is it just ease of setup?

I just run the strap through the loop. That's 5 extra seconds I can afford. No need to carry hardware.

Sometimes people have their webbing connected all the time to their hammocks which means you can't thread the end thru, so they use a carabiner.

Not so much for setting up for me, but for taking it down without having to take the straps out of the descender rings on my hammock suspension when I want to just get everything packed up. Then it is easier for the next time to set it up as well.

If you misjudged and need to move the strap up or down the tree, you can easily unclip, move past branches on the trunk and reattach with the whole hammock rig in place.

Biner can also give you the option of attaching through both tree strap end loops which is the strongest config.

Another handy thing about biners is the extra bit of weight for getting straps around big trees. In the past it has allowed me to swing the end around trees too big for my arms to reach around. As others have said, it is ease of use and set up. Nothing wrong with using the loop depending on how you like to rig your suspension.

Yes I do that too. Kind of fling it around the tree and try to grab it with my other hand as it swings around. I usually miss and have to walk around and pick it up off the ground, but at least it gets half way there.

I just use the loop myself. Saves the weight, and I have found it to work very well. I think that you can't go wrong either way, just whatever works for you.

I did start out using a carabiner, but that was because I used the strap system on a WBBB, and there was only the one free end to work with. Now that I put Whoopies over a Marlin Spike Hitch, I have a free tail to just use the loop.

I have used biners for everything in the past 30 years or more, and with time, they have become super super lite weight. Always keep a couple of beiners with me for emergency purposes, even for whitewater kayaking, easy to set up a Z drag line for emergencys, If you need them switch out to toggle and use the biner for something else,,to me ,,,its just a great piece of equipment you cannot go wrong with even if you don't use it all the time.
