    BlakcBird + Wallcreeper/Dreamwalker = Peapod

This has been mentioned some time ago but here it is one more time with some pictures.

A marriage between WBBB and an Exped Wallcreeper (new name is Dreamwalker) sleeping bag and their love child - pea-pod.

Setup is not difficult and it can work without any modifications. I tried this on a 10C day with a bit of wind chill and I was immediately warm inside. I also had a pad, Exped MultiMat, under me.
One of the limitations is that you can not use the bug net. Not that many bugs at 10C, anyway.

Bottom of the bag cinches nicely around the hammock and stays there.

Top of the bag would require an additional cinch-cord to seal the bag well and to keep it close to the body. I've used the cord that tightens the hood. It works but it's a week link.

Here it is with me in it:

The bulge at the top is from my hands still pulling the zipper.

I am quite satisfied that this setup works if only it's to be used out of necessity. When I used the bag inside the hammock with a mat under me, I immediately got a cold but syndrome. I like things that have more then one purpose.

    Cheers.

Very nice set-up, are you still able to lay diagonal? Or do you have to be more centered?

    great pics!

you and i are right on line with the peapod ideas. i looked heavily at the exped wallcreeper for this very purpose, as HF'er bigfoot2 broke me off on it this summer. i went with a feathered friends wren, though.

awesome that you got it to work on your wbbb, and thanks for taking the time to share with us.

i also, am interested to hear about using without a pad, as i'll be testing my system next week, too.

Bag is quite roomy so it allows any sort of lay. No issue with diagonal lay.

This is a 400L model and it weighs at around 1150g. Rated: Upper Limit: 19, Comfort: 8, Limit: 3.
Good point about the pad. It seems redundant with this configuration but I had it with me so I put it in anyway. It probably adds to warmth but it's still a very thin pad.
It's also very, very light at 350g.

That Wren bag sure seems nice.

I was experimenting with this setup so I didn't spend a lot of time in the hammock. If the top of the bag is to be cinched in a better way I think it will work for temperatures around 5-10C.

    Cheers.

    Nice

I think MedicineMan does something like that for his first layer then encases that with a real peapod.

I have a Speer peapod and love it! Don't know why more people don't use them.

Here you go. I use the Warbonnet Traveler instead of the Blackbird so no netting to hinder:

    Cheers Medicine Man.
That's a serious winter set-up in the first video.
Do you have issues with condensation?

Wallcreeper is quite large when packed (reasonably compressed) and I imagine the PeaPod being even bigger. It's a lot of bulk to carry.

When using the double pod system I pulked the load most of the way...backpacked it in the last 1/4 mile. Yes bulky indeed but probably good to -15 or -20F.
Condensation....there was ice formed on the inside of the hammock sock. When I woke up it looked white-slapped it with my hand and it 'snowed' inside.
Right where the MountainHardware Sleeping Bag Expander meets my face I put a piece of shamwow, it absorbs the moisture out of the breath and keeps away from the down.
It was a fun experiment ~double podding~ but far beyond 99% of my coldest hikes/hangs.
