    4 Season Cuben Tarp

For those who own one of these, have you ever pitched it really close to the ground? Was there enough room and height to hang your hammock? For winter use, I tend to pitch my Superfly really close to the ground to minimize drafts. I still have plenty of room to move about and height enough so my quilts don't bottom out and touch the ground. Any comments on how the Hammock gear 4 season cuben tarp would do if pitched like I described?

    Thanks,

    S

You'd be giving up a foot and a half of width between those two. To achieve the same head room, you'd need a much steeper pitch resulting in much less floor area.
An 8.5' wide tarp cannot offer the same coverage as a 10' wide tarp regardless of material used.

The HG certainly has enough vertical to keep your quilts off the ground on a tight/edge to the ground pitch. Glad I sprung for the side pulls on both sides.

If you're spoiled by the space of the Superfly then you should consider having Stormcrow do a wider custom tarp like the one he did for Watermonkey. http://watermonkey.net/2011/10/23/wi...ce-cuben-tarp/

I was out last week with a group and was really reconsidering the Superfly that another guy had as a roomier winter option, even for the weight penalty.

I agree David, a wider tarp would be nice for a winter option. ive been throwing around ideas for that.

And then the "tarp skirt" was born, the daughter of the Grizzbeak.
Makes one wonder how a foot extension the spanned the length of the side guy lines would work...or not. For that matter, a two foot wide one would make for ridgeline that would allow even the tallest hanger to stand upright as such an extension could drape straight down perpendicular to the ground.

Here are some pictures of my HG 4S Cuben tarp from a recent trip where it was extremely windy. I got it pretty close to the ground and had some room to move around on the inside.

love the inside view of that tarp.
I've got a MLD DuoMid and when Ron made it he added bug netting all along the bottom edge...12 inches...its simplies drapes straight to the ground for bugs and ventilation.
So I see the merit of adding a tarp skirt to close the gap.
I'd suggest ZQ/TQ start planning on orders for such now
Be cool to shock clip it to each existing tarp corner and the part that drapes the ground cover with snow/dirt/whatever.
This will be problematic for use pole mod users

I think you're right. When Adam starts making tarps again, I'm going to ask for the longer sides. I want to start bringing my dog with me, I want to enclose the tarp so the drafts are not on the dog.

Awesome pictures! Thanks for those. Looked really windy that trip. Good way to test out your rigging.

I loved my super fly dimensions, and Joe from zpacks did a custom order for me - cuben tarp with same footprint as the SF. Love it!
