    Hoping someone can help...

In Ed Speer's book Hammock Camping, he says that 5 yards of fabric is needed for the hammock alone. But according to his formula, I should only need 3.5 yards. Can anyone suggest a reason for the extra??

I want to make a set-up for myself and my daughter over the winter.

Use Knotty's method to make a gathered end. It's been working great for a ton of people including myself.

I like Knotty's for the foot end and Just Jeff's for the head end.

If you look at Ed's directions in the book, it says to tie an overhand knot. This takes a lot of material.

If you use the WB method, as documented in Knotty's thread, you will consume several inches...

My favorite hammock started at 11', though 10' is quite nice.

I like a finished length of 10'. Tying the knot in the is a real fabric hog method IMO. Easily an extra two feet per end. I prefer the gathered channel knob myself. 11' should be enough if you are careful with your channel hems. If you want to pleat gather your ends you will need probably an additional foot to each end.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I find 10'6" of raw material works well for taller people (6' plus). I can probably go down to 10' but find hammocks made from 9' of material to be uncomfortable. I'm 6'2". But remember, it's all a matter of personal taste.
