    Non-baffle UQ questions

I wanted to make a down UQ, but don’t have the time to sew baffles.

Has anyone tried to set the thickness of an UQ using yarn/thread to set the thickness of the UQ. The yarn/thread would be sewn through the quilt and back through again and then tied off at the appropriate thickness.

This would be a takeoff on the bag-o-feathers but limiting the thickness using the yarn/thread set in a grid across the UQ.

I got the idea from some old quilts that my grandmother and mother made.

Has anyone tried this in the past? Any watchouts?

    Thanks,

Would it suffer from down migration over time? Not sure how tight/close you can get the stitches without the feathers escaping?

I'd watch out for the down migrating to the edges of the quilt.

Think you'd have to much migration across the quilt resulting in uneven warmth...

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yea, I was thinking the migration thing might be a problem. Just trying to think outside the box a little bit.

MrClockWork you have definitely not seen my sewing abilities I was just trying to think outside the box a little bit to see if anyone had any feedback before I committed myself.

    Thanks

Old quilts my great grandmother made gave me the exact same idea. I realized, however, that this design of a quilt is made to hold BATTING in place---not down.

Still, it's not a bad idea, as some members here have had success with down underquilts with NO baffles (they just shake the down where they want it).

Your threads would help the underquilt keep its shape. So, good luck!

This is what my grandmother called comforter construction, not quilting. It is worth a try. You may have to adjust the down at times. How much will depend on circumstances. You would basically be tying yarn to create tufts at points, right?

and sitting there sewing yarn to your quilt will take time
sewn through quilts are a pain if you ask me ... the extra time it takes to sew baffles is well worth it in the long run i say this because a sewn through UQ is only good down to 45F for most users ... so it's very limited and swing baffles is not as much more added time that you think...
maybe an hour ... like i said well worth it
without the baffles like others have said your going to have way too much migration of your down ... why not make a Synth UQ if you don't want to deal with baffles
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Would attaching all of the yard not take longer than sewing the baffles in the first place? Without any more info it seems like it might be more trouble than its worth.

Sewing on the baffles is just about the easiest task on an UQ-just sew straight down the marked lines. They fly on, compared to other gear sewing..

Its well worth the time IMHO
