Cool Nearly completed Kickass Inspired underquilt

I have uploaded some pictures of my Kickass inspired underquilt. I have to finish the quilting loops and then string the supporting lines and I will be done and ready for testing. It has two inches of Primaloft Sport I got from Thru-Hiker.com. When I'm done later this week I'll weigh it.

Patrick of KAQ has been very supportive during this project.

Chump Monkey, mentioning a 10 week old demands pictures Cograts on the new daughter.

Touch of Grey, the design and sewing on that quilt looks really great. Hope you will let us know how the 2" of primaloft compares to other quilts you've used.

    All Done!!!!!

Okay, well I have finally finished and gotten my early Christmas present so I can now do some backyard safe testing.

I have downloaded some more pictures of the final product and my set-up.

As a side note, here is the lay of the land.
    • Mac Cat Standard Tarp
    • Hennesey UL Explorer
    • Hennesey Super Shelter (no foam - just the liner - Windblock material)
    • Kickass inspired design Under Quilt (Thank You Patrick!) (2 inches of Primaloft Sport)
    • Western Mountaineering Sequoia 5 degree bag (used as an over quilt opened - 3 1/2 inches of loft when opened)
Set it all up today and just came in from taking a nap for a couple of hours in a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of wool socks. Temps today here in the Detroit area are 42 degrees with a SE wind of 7 MPH for a wind chill of 38 degrees. I was warm enough that the over quilt was only at my waist for most of the nap or loosely pulled up on my chest.

Balmy by most standards but hey it was a safe test to begin with. Now with Winter coming tomorrow, I'll get into the real testing phase.

Looks like a great setup...I bet it'll keep you warm well into the 20s, at least. Now if you put some styrofoam in there...

    Thumbs up

What a great night to sleep in the hammock!

Spent the night last night in the hammock and slept well as usual. Awoke twice once at 1 AM to take a whiz and again at 5 AM, about my normal wake up time. I rolled over and went back to sleep until the dog was let out by my wife at 7 AM. Temps were in the high 30's when I went to bed and this morning according to the weather service for my area are at 35 right now at 720 am, humidity of 93 percent and wind chill of 31.

Slept in polypro long sleeve shirt and pants, wool hiking socks, fleece mittens (Risk design) and a balacava.

There are some minor things I'll have to check out but for the most part this first extended test went well. The minor things to check are why at 5 am I felt a chill on my back. I know I had some concern with the shock cord size and strength I used and so will change that out and do another test to eliminate that as a suspect. It could also have been that I moved just before I awoke and let a draft of cold in because when I took off a mitt and felt below me it did not feel cool.

Because of high humidity and temps and having the tarp pulled close, maybe too close there was some condensation issues which i need to address. Most likely fix is to raise either the foot or head end of the tarp a couple of inches to allow warm moist air to vent better.

Other than my wife and daughter thinking I was crazy to be out there last night and the dog being upset at not being out there with me, I am feeling pretty cofident in my arrangement and now only have to tweak it a little.

    Come on March 11!

    Nice report.

How much loft does your quilt have. If it helps high 30's is usually where in my JRB nest I need to add some more insulation to be warm on the bottom.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?
