    Tips on staying warm, please

    Hi all,
I was out in my HH explorer at the weekend. I learned the hard way a while ago that your sleeping bag will not keep your back warm in a hammock. I now use an army issue arctic sleeping bag. The temperature on the night I was out was -6C and I'd taken a ground mat to insulate beneath me but it proved a bit uncomfortable and I had to pretty much stay still for the night to avoid rolling off it.
I was just about warm enough but would have liked to be warmer. Are there any simple tips that you could give me to set me in the right direction? I would ideally like to be warm, comfortable and I like to be able to move about during the night.
Thanks in advance for any words of advice.

Sounds like you need a good underquilt. Lots of vendors here that offer them. If you are handt you could convert an old sleeping bag into an underquilt.

    Here are a few:

    Hot water bottle.
    Under quilt.
    Pads.
    Vapor Barriers.
    Layers.

It sounds like you are just starting out with the hammock so I would recommend the Book that Dejoha wrote. What a great source for information regarding hammock camping. I would also recommend the youtube video series from Shug. Hammock Videos for Noobs and what-nots. I found these two sources invaluable. Happy hammock camping. and oh Yeah Welcome to the forums.

Kieren, all the things others have said all ready, like the list Dejoha posted and the others. I see you use an HH. Hennessy also sells something called the SuperShelter. It works good for me and some others( but not for some folks). As do the various UQs. http://warbonnetoutdoors.com/quilts.php http://www.jacksrbetter.com/Mt%20Washington.htm
    http://www.hammockgear.com/cart/inde...ndex&cPath=3_6 for example.

And if you had a double layer hammock (pad pocket) or made something called an SPE http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ight=Segmented you would have no trouble staying on your pad. But it still might not be as comfy as an UQ, most folks would agree.

And IF you have a No Net hammock, or one where the net can be moved out of the way, the is something called a PeaPod or PolarPod. There is never any worry about changing positions and moving onto a cold spot or causing a draft with those babies:

Brilliant, thanks. Plenty to keep me going there. HH sales are limited over here and the Super Shelter is not available. I will have a look in to everything that has been suggested.
Dejoha, is there a digital version of your book available? I would be very interested in reading it. In the mean time I'll have a look through everything you've all posted.
    Thanks again.

If funds are tight (UQ's can get pricey) you can convert an old sleeping bag into an under quilt. A number of people have posted how they've done this. Should be easy to find using the search function.

I think the book can be purchased on Amazon as an ebook.
