Let me stop lurking, say hello, and give a little back story how a HF member got me thinking about getting off the ground ...
My buddy and I were hiking the MD section of the AT this past April. (I don't know what UL is, my pack weighed at least 40-45 lbs.) On our last morning, we were packing gear and finishing a cup of coffee when this guy pops by the Ed Garvey Shelter. He had a pack on and was moving 3 times as fast as I was at that time of the day. We asked where he had come from. He enthusiastically explained that he had slept in his hammock just north of us. We were pretty inquisitive about this hammock camping idea ... and how light his pack was. He looked at two trees, and said I can show you quickly. We welcomed the demo. We were amazed that he was hanging this 'sheet' looking material with what looked like dental floss. I said "there's no way that would hold me!" He went on to tell us about this site and how we could learn tons more here when we had time. I thought about that light hammock set up the whole way into Harpers Ferry! So here I am with an ENO Double and some Whoopie Slings. Looking to get off the ground and continue to lighten my load.
I could not remember the members name, but luckily during my lurking around ... I found out & confirmed that I met Joey. Thanks Joey!
Now my three kids all want to hang with me, and my wife thinks I'm a bit nuts. Looks like we will all be able to do some DIY projects, get to test new gear, and spend some more time together in the woods.
I have already learned a bunch here, and I look forward to learning more from you folks along the way. - Randy
