"You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to." Bilbo Baggins, as quoted by Frodo The Fellowship of the Ring
I hang mine at the head end of my hammock.
I have found that after hanging it in different spots around the hammock, I now use my pack cover to sit the bag on. In many cases it ends up with an empty pack in it at the bottom and what was in my bag in the pack cover.
Keeps it all dry, yet I can see everything and it's within in reach.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.
If it's fair weather, I usually just shove it next to my sandals, on top of my sit pad, underneath the hammock, and let it be.
If it's looking like rain, but not a storm, I do the same as above.
If it's looking like a storm, I'll wrap it in my poncho on top of my sit pad (that way, I can get at my poncho quickly if needed) underneath the hammock.
If it's looking like a typhoon (the NE Florida hang comes to mind), I clip it to the loop at the foot end gather of my hammock with a mini 'biner. (It almost always pays to have an extra one or two of those on the trail, in my limited experience.) If I don't have an extra 'biner, I'll use some of my extra cordage to do the same. In this situation, I'll be throwing my poncho up to act as an impromptu Grizz beak anyway.
If it's cold out, and I'm going to want my sit pad for underneath my feet, I'll set it on top of the compacter bag I use to line it (remember, "cold" here in Florida means no precipitation nine times out of ten).
I used my hammock for a six month At thru-hike in 2009, and all I ever did with my pack was to lay it on the ground underneath my hammock with the rain cover on it.

I have one of the Jeff's Gear Hammocks. While it works great as both a pack cover and gear hammock I did make one additional mod. I added a loop of webbing on the inside and outside about a third of the way from the top edge. So, now I clip a biner on the inside and hang my pack from that. A biner goes into the outside loop and it gets clipped to my hammock suspension.
The entire pack gets covered, it's off the ground, but still under my tarp. It's not as much of an easy access setup as it is in gear hammock mode. I normally have everything I need for the night in my ridgeline organizer so that hasn't been a problem so far.
My pack hangs nicely on the toggle I use in my marlin spike hitch. It hangs by the included loop that comes on most packs - the loop that sits right above your neck when the pack it worn.
