    New Years Overnight

Decided to camp out News Years along my favorite local trail. Since I had to work Saturday it was dark when I hit the trail. Hiked 2.5 miles from Oyster Point to Blackjack Lodge and spent the night. Always enjoyed hiking at night. The trail looks different under the moon light and stars.

According to the log book there were several hikers on the trail heading north but I was the only one at the shelter.

While the skies were clear and no rain was in the forcast I set up my tarp just in case.

Set up my hammock and took some pictures of the set up in the dark. I was testing a new underquilt (BigTurtle) for my hammock that was christmas present. Need to do some work on dialing in the UQ as I not warm or cold but a little on the cool side. Got up about 2pm to fiddle with the UQ and it seemed to help. Having problem getting it snug against the bottom of the hammock thus leaving a gap. Part of the fun is getting to play with my toys. According to my temp guage it got down to 36 degrees.

While I heard fireworks most of the night there was a major display somewhere about midnight that went on for sometime. Could not see it but I sure could hear it.

Got up about 7:30am and made a fire for warmth and fixed breakfast. Packed up and hiked back to Oyster Point. Did not see any wildlife but I did see lots of deer tracks.

happy NewYear gunner---------and thanks for the trail report! Sounds like a pretty good way to start the new year!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

    Your suggestions are appeciated.

I tried tight and loose. This is my first FL UQ (my others are 3/4) and I think that is not getting enough support in the middle to hold it in close to the hammock. When I was in the hammock I could stick my hand underneath the hammock and tell there was a gap of about 3 or 4 inches from the hammock to the UQ. I think I am going to have to use Triangle Thinges and get some of Dutch's Quilt Clips (when they become avaialble). I did order the UQ with two loops side to help hold it up in case this was an issue and I when I used them about half way thru the night (I used an extra tarp tie out line thrown over the hammocks ridgeline) it the gap decreased but did not go away completly.

So I will be setting up in the S.H.I.T. to play with the UQ some more.

Good to see your out & about trying out some goodies that santa brought you
& breathing in some cool pine scented air.
Love the blanket of pine needles covering the ground, we rarely see that 'down under'. Except in the commercial plantations.

Wow - that sure looks like a coastal pine forest, just like the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where I've been camping a lot lately. Is that fire damage on the trees?

Those are North Carolina Long Leaf Pine trees. I was truly camping in the piney woods (and hanging from them)

While there have been fires in the area, the damage you see are from people hacking at the trees around the shelter and the trees responded by sending out massive amounts of sap. It always saddens me to see the sinless damage done to the trees around the shelters and the trash they leave behind.
