Linville Gorge 2012-2013 New Years Trip Report
Quinn and I did an abbreviated north – west LVG hike this past weekend to kick off the 2012-2013 New Year.
Temps were teens at night to 40’s during the day with periods of wind driven snow and ice.
We arrived late Friday and overnighted at the top with ice and driving ice/snow mixture. The tarps iced up nicely and probably stabilized them against the wind.
Wanting to add to our LVG bucket list and in light snow we descended at the northern tip adjacent the falls and proceeded to miss the MWRIGHT trail. We ended up on an unmarked trail below Erwin View which hugged the river for about 1.5 miles. We ascended and picked up the MWRIGHT and Pine Gap juncture and made our way to the base of Cabin Trail to a great camp that evening.
That evening the wind was probably blowing 20plus and the snow was coming down sideways. With the wind-chill it was probably single digits.
The next morning we ascended cabin trail in black ice and light snow. We had to bushwhack around impassable icy areas. This was a slow sobering climb on ice and a scary ledge to our right. The normally 1 hour climb ended up around 3 hours. Late lunch at Denny’s 

    refugees under my tarp

We were at LVG April 2013 and I realized a big problem with a great tarp; refugee ground dwellers invaded my space.

Best dang reason to own a good full coverage tarp I've ever seen!

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.
