    Tarp for Double Hanging

    Question
Last week we tried double hanging our Speers and it worked well (with no tarp or precipitation) BUT we'd like to rig our Hennesseys double under one tarp....possibly head to foot.

The hex HH tarp seems a little small for 2.

Would the ex large MacCat do it?

Outdoor stores often sell rubber tips for hiking poles which could be on the poles to protect the fly when used as spreaders.

    Good site.

If you want a tarp tht will definitely be large enough for 2 hammocks, go with a Speer Winter Tarp. It's big enough to allow plenty of room, but lightweight enough so that carrying it isn't a burden on anyone. I've seen this tarp a couple times (Thanks HC and Youngblood) and am thoroughly impressed with it. It's a great piece of gear that you really can't go wrong with.

Aside from Hooch's recommendation, you might check with Brian of OES about making a Titan. It isn't listed on the site, but he made at least one MacCat that was even larger than the deluxe model. That should be large enough for two hangars.

The largest MacCat is 130" x 102". The PU HH hex is 132"x 120",
    the sil version is 144" x 132".

Brian of OES (the MacCat guy) does sell larger cat-cut tarps, but not
    under the MacCat model name.

A rectangular tarp that is 10+ feet wide can provide rain protection for two side by side Speer Hammocks but not much in the way of wind protection. But the spacing for Hennessy Hammocks with side pullouts is an unknown to me and I don't know how the height of the hammock in regards to the bottom entries plays into it either, so I can't comment of that arrangement.

Ed Speer often pitches 2 eight foot wide rectangular tarps to get coverage all the way to the ground with his two hammock setups by overlapping them a foot or so, effectively making a 14 to 15 foot wide tarp. Again that isn't with the hammocks that have side pullouts but that is another approach-- overlapping two rectangular tarps to effectively get a larger tarp.

Thanks for the useful replies and good ideas.

Dave--your winter tarp looks interesting. I didn't mention it but I hang often at or near timberline so a cat cut is preferred....Rainier, Olympic and Sequoia-Kings.

Speers is great and his book got me started. Tom Hennessy too ... chatted with both several times.

Seldom use the tie outs on the Hennessys.

like youngblod said, overlapping two tarps may be your best bet.
i've done that a few times but fortunately we didn't have much rain w/ wind. otherwise we would have had to do something about the high, open ends.

Take a look at how I use two tarps to cover us and the dog.
