    Help deciding on a UQ

    A little help needed guys.

I'm trying to decide which underquilt to get between a 40* Phoenix overstuffed with 2oz or just a standard 20*. Most of the camping I do has night time temps between 40*-60* but I would like to start stretching it to 30*. I will rarely go below 30* and when I do I won't mind using a pad. I love sleeping in the the cold but hate a cold back when doing so.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it were me....the 20º. You can always vent it a bit.

    I'm with Shug.
I have a 20 degree incubator that I've used anywhere from 15 degrees up to around 70 degrees.

I'm with Shug too. I'd buy the next colder one to what you expect to camp in; that way, you can be more sure of your temps. But, I'd go one further. I had a winter Yeti & a Flamethrower (both 3/4 UQs). I got the Incubator 0* & if I made the choice again, I'd again go with the full length one with the colder rating.

I think that Adam makes the baffles bigger on the colder rated UQs. If you got like a 40* one, it has less loft according to the website that the 20* one. Even with the overstuffing, I don't think it would make the baffles bigger, just more jammed.

Shug, Adam, do you want to chime in with your expertise?

By the way, I was extremely happy with my two HG Incubators & I will be getting another one later! Outstanding service, quality and communication from Adam & Jenny.

I'm with you Rod, baffle height is where the insulation is, not necessarily how much insulation is in it. Overstuff helps maximize loft. I'd get the 20 and you'll be set for anything you expect to encounter

Go with the 20* and you'll be set. You can vent it in warm weather.

I used a 20* all summer and would vent when it was too warm. But really I'd rather be a little too warm that cold!

I love and prefer my summer phoenix with 1oz overfill. It gets me to 30 degrees comfortably, but in the wind I can feel a slight chill at times. Its in my mind, the most versatile for its weight.

But...if I were you I'd go with the 3 season. If you plan to do 6oz in a summer quilt, you might as well do the 3 season with 7oz. Also it won't be too hot to use in the summer. This weekend was a prime example of scheduling a trip that ended up going beyond my summer UQs limit. So even if you only plan to take it to 30 (doubtful, everyone ends up pushing their limits), atleast you a bit more prepared. With a ccf pad I'm sure you could get it to 15 deg or a little lower. After that I assume you reallllly don't want to be out if your plans were to 30. And all for only 1oz more of down
