On one hiking trip on the AT I stopped at a shelter for the night. When I walked in a few people sleeping in the shelter for the night asked if I was planning on sleeping in the shelter. When I told them no that I'll hang out back. After setting up my hammock I came to the picnic table to eat and one of the guys asked me my name I introduced myself by my name since I did not have a trail name. He thought for a minute and then started to call me I Hang and it just stuck after that.
