My friends used to call me billy bob or BB.
Then I went to a few of Tom Brown Jr's
Wilderness survival classes , one was for tracking,
And stalking. There you go, TrackerBB.

So at one point in my life I was perfectly comfortable doing all of my outdoor activities without much thought. Now I read all of the "right" ways of doing things such as patterning deer, targeting certain species of fish, buying a certain rod and reel for each species and water type, buying better gear because of reviews, and traveling further distances to target certain game. With all of this new gear and new knowledge I actually feel more awkward as a "sportsman" because I am always questioning my gear, position, and decision making.

I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone. It's hard to explain a feeling like that I guess.
It makes complete sense. I went through it at about 35 when my first kid go old enough to start going with and I started over in my "outdoorsmanship". I went through a much smaller version a few years ago when I discovered hammocks and then this site. Now it's pretty easy to keep my finger on the pulse of the stuff specifically relevant to me. All that to say: don't worry, it get's better.

Hoghead is a slang word on the railroad for Engineer. That is my profession and thought that seemed fitting.

    Had it for years

Sauce is the first part of my last name. It was my nickname at school, in sports, in the army, and at work. Occasionally, when I'm on fire, I've been called hot sauce...

just stumble on this thread and it's been a great read so far!

for me, I've had several handles and call signs over the years. In high school I was known as Doc. My SN on other forums is good2go. When I was in the USAF, I crosstrained into flight engineering, and my call sign while flying, was given because when we reached go/nogo speed, I'd announce, "We're good2go!".

But I chose my screen name from the time during survival school when I became known as lostagain. Our element's leader was a lieutenant who was forever thinking he was lost when land navigating. He never was, but when we'd stop to verify our location, he'd say "I think we're lost!" So, at one point we stopped, he looked at his map and frowned and I said, "Sir? Are we lost again?" after that the other guys called him Lost and me Lostagain. It was also form my snarky take on the Army and Air Force songs. "Over hill, over dale, I can't find the f(^$*%ng trail! And i"m lost in, the woo-oods again..." and "Off we go into the wild blue yonderrr, LOST AGAIN! Sonovab(*&^ch!"

Awaiting a trailname, till then I'll stick with what seems appropos for a hiking and hanging forum.

I wasn't creative enough to come up with a special name other than my own.

Yeah, same boat here. Couldn't think of a sufficient 'handle' that didn't sound pretentious or wonky. In retrospect, "Beastly" would have been a lot better.

In addition to being a backpacker, I also brew beer. When brewing, I use a large plastic spoon to stir the wort... hence the name.
