I've only made it to page 106 but just joined and wanted to get in on this. This thread is quite interesting - both in looking at names and where everyone is from!
I’m a land surveyor from Rhode Island (who is ironically mostly chained to a desk) at work. A benchmark is what a surveyor would use to establish an elevation for a site – historically from one of those brass disks that an agency like NGS would have set a while ago. These days we typically will use GPS to do this. There were plenty of other obscure surveying terms I thought about using for my screen name but liked this the best…and don’t worry – I won’t be trying to set a benchmark on this site with any of my posts!
