19º Test Set Up Last Night

I have been tossing around in my mind an insulation set up for a month or so and last night with a low of around 20º expected, I decided that it was the perfect time to test it out. The set up consisted of a Traveller hammock with an original Mac IX under quilt next to the hammock. Next I added my Go Lite Ultra 20 top quilt inside the hammock. Then I took my JRB Stealth quilt and enclosed the hammock and Go Lite quilt much like a pea-pod by cinching up the Stealth at the foot end, velcroing the foot box closed and then tying it closed in the middle and and the head end with shock cord. I finished the set up by attaching my Winter Yeti under it all. The temp at around 6:00 am was actually 19º and I was warm and toasty all night long except when I had to get up and pee ice cubes. I was wearing a mid weight base layer, flamethrower down socks, and a JRB down hood. I had intended to wear a pair of possum down mittens but I forgot them. Turns out that i did not need them. I had my down jacket handy but did not need it either. I'm sure that I could have been warm and comfortable to around zero. I could replace the JRB Stealth in the set up with my No Sniveler for another 20º of warmth. I did not take any photos but It is still set up in the back yard so maybe I can make some photos tomorrow.

With all that stuff under, over and around you, I would think you could stay toasty warm to 19 BELOW! Wow man cool setup and yet warm.

You must be the original cold sleeper. From now on we should stop calling them cold sleepers and call them Southmarks. Hot sleepers will hereafter be referred to as Northmarks.

I'm definitely a Northmark - you have twice the insulation I would require at 19 degrees. However, I sure would like to have your setup for some below freezing camping!

I'm a southmark then, but not a Southmark-there is only one of those....but yet again trailnames take on verb and adjective meaning(s).

Hey MedicineMan, with that set up and a Mac Sock I think I should be good at RHK.

Well I am a cold sleeper but that is more insulation than I require at 19º. I was doing the best test that I could, considering that is about as low as it gets around here, to prepare for the Roan High Knob Hang in February. Last year we had a low of 1.8º with 40 mph winds.

Yes it sounds like you will be fine; and there is always the hot water bottle for insurance. You know we all hung right on the knob-facing the hardest most brutal of the winds....if we were to be wiser this time we could got off that knob at least when its time to sleep but what challenge would that be.

I'm planning on using a different setup too this time.
So far its going to be a snugfit and the LeighLo 5-50 below
and a Winter Mamba on top......all wrapped in a MacIX sock.

We'll know more a couple days out...

This is an interesting approach of trying to get max insulation by layering whatever you already have.

I'm having a little trouble picturing the "stealth as Pod" approach. How do you have enough width to wrap around the hammock? Is it only wrapped around at the foot end, then hanging as a normal UQ in the torso area?

Also curious, how low of a temp have you been able to stay comfy in using the Winter Yeti alone?
