    wear and tear

I plan to hike the PCT this coming year. I know I won't be able to hang all the time and it is possible I might have to go to ground as much as 25% of the time. Assuming those numbers are correct, I will be able to use my hammock about 113 nights. I currently use Dynaglide whoopie slings as part of my suspension system and wonder if I should have a second (or third?) set of slings, just in case mine give way. This is a long lead up to my question of longevity... I just don't have enough hang time to know how long my current gear will hold up. Any thoughts? If it matters, I am currently using a home made, gathered end hammock.

Although they are starting to look a little stretched at the bury, my dynaglide whoopies have well over 100 nights on them and are still going strong. I weigh 200+ pounds. However I do carry a single dynaglide whoopie in my first aid/repair kit. I figure they wiegh almost nothing and if I use it I can get another b4 I need the next one. They also have other uses like a suspension extension or a great wash line.

Thanks for the feedback. That gives me some confidence in how things will probably go... I will have another as backup. BTY, I just got some of your hardware and am very happy with my goodies! Appreciate all the generosity afforded to folks on this forum.

I agree with Dutch: bring along a second set and use them as multi-use items along the trail when not engaged as suspension. In fact, you could use Whoopie slings on each corner of your tarp and have multiple backups.

That's a great idea. Two birds, etc.

I must say, I love your book and have gleaned some real nuggets from reading it. Thanks for writing it and getting it published... no easy feat.

You could use a dynaglide adjustable ridge line. If anything goes wrong, just pull it off the hammock and use it for your suspension. Easy to make or get one from Paul at Arrowhead equipment.

before changing my hike this year to the AT
I planned on bringing one pro nut stopper size 5 ( I think it was)
and an 18 inch sling so I could hang just about anywhere
(searched hanging from rocks here or non-tree set ups)

a very helpful guy from REI off the record told me about a few possible
set ups since I am not a rock climber.

I have such a ridge line. Maybe I'll keep the replacement in my bounce box in case I need it, rather than carrying it around. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks a bunch.

I have a friend who owns the local climbing gym, I'll bet she would help me with some set ups. Thanks. I'll check out the archives for more information.

Better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.
