Post I'm still a new hanger, but it was -10 C Saturday night

Hi, I've been watching the site and forums for a few months and wanted to report that the info in Jeff's site and in the Forums that I've used has been helpful.

This weekend was a shakedown campout to prepare for a 2 night trip with my son's Boy Scout troop. Although we are low on snow in Northern MN, it did get down to about 15 F (-10 C). I used my Hennesy but used a 1-1/2 inch foam pad and my old school Army issue -40 sleeping bag. I stayed warm all night, but will make some kind of extra quilt/blanket for my feet (I had severe frostbite in both feet 7 years ago around J-bad (Afghanistan)).

I'm looking forward to our outing and will report in with some pictures, etc.

    Best regards,
    455Markh

I can relate to that, but it was more like 20 years ago. The bad news, they never really get better.

My feet were my greatest concern when it came to hammocking. For the most part, they aren't a big issue. Every now and again, they are a very big issue. The trick I have found that works the best is to 'bag' my feet at night. Most often, I shove them into a couple of stuff sacks, or plastic grocery bags when I go to bed. The vapor barrier created by the bags does a marvelous job of keeping, or getting, my feet warm. If you've got the room for a few extra ounces, Arrowhead's Flamethower down socks are the bomb-diggity to sleep in!

Welcome 455Markh, and congrats on such a warm result on your 1st attempt! Good that you did not freeze like I did on my 1st ever night in a hammock!

I am equally that you managed not to overheat with a minus 40 bag! You must have found a way to vent but not too much.

+1 on Cannibal's advice fro keeping feet warm.

Welcome Markh! I was wondering if any/many of your scouts are hanging' yet, esp in those winter temps?

    Scout Outing

Hi - A few of my scouts dropped out, but still had 4 scouts for our winter camping experience. These were 3 1st Class and 1 2nd Class (ages 12 to 14). The more senior scouts in our troop are hangers, but didn't participate this past weekend.
The temp was -10 F (-23 C) the first night. I had my wife sew up an inner bag for my feet out of thick fleece material (she is a champ for supporting my scouts and I). My upper body stayed warm - I had the bag zipped up about 3/4th the way and snapped the rest for ventilation. But, I kicked the fleece bag off during the night and woke up to grey/pale feet - the pads of each foot were white and stiff with frostbite. After warming up, it was a good time participating in all the activities with my scouts. We built a thermal shelter and a hasty survival shelter. We did some ice fishing and learned about trapping.

The second night was considerablly warmer ( about 15F) and the dual bag system worked better.

Mark, thanks for your service to us.

You might want to look into some down booties. I have a pair of Sierra Designs, a pair of The North Face Nuptse III (REI).

I've heard that the ones by Feathered Friends are great.

There's also a new pair out by one of the regular vendors on the HF, Paul at ArrowHead Equipment. You might check out the threats under Manufacturers. Here's a link to his 'socks': http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/a...s/show/2837445

So, on an outing with the boyscouts, what percentage are hangers?
