    Dehydrator

LF a dehydrator with fruit trays. I like saucy things

If you have any information for me on what to look for in a dehydrator I would love the advise...I want to convert completely to rehydrate food on the trail and I don't want to always have to borrow a friends to do so. So any information on the subject would be great.

    Thanks

I picked a 9-tray Excalibur Dehydrator based on reading about a bazillion reviews on various units. The Excalibur consistently did well and I haven't had problem one with it, other than finding counter space without making the GF get angry.

What I gleaned from my reading was that the most important thing is that the unit have a fan and heat source. It helps aid in even dehydrating of the food and speeds things up a little bit too. Sorry I'm not more help, but I got lucky and found what I wanted on my first try.

Also have a 5-tray Excalibur and love it. In addition to trail meals and snacks (dried fruit, mainly), it's handy for drying cherry tomatoes. Nice to have if you garden as well as hike.

Hey there, thank you very much for the helpful replies!

The Excalibur! That thing looks beautiful. I definitely only wanted to spend up to 60 bucks on one, that is way out of my price range

BUT the advise I heed. Heat source, fan, distributes heat...thanks Cannibal!

I was unsure about the use of saran wrap, I thought about it but then pictured it melting in to my food hehehe.

I was looking at this one: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...p?SKU=14099344

My gf who is a frugal coupon collector and has a 20% coupon which makes this all the more appealing....not sure yet still reading on the internet

I have a Nesco and it works great.

Tip... you may want to buy some more fruit roll up trays.

I read tons of reviews and Excalibur is well loved. I went with the nesco professional 5 tray because amazon had it cheap. $50 or so. No regrets. I am bad about buying toys and losing interest.

    This is mine.

I strongly suggest ordering 2 or 3 more trays with your order and maybe 2 or 3 more fruit leather / liquid trays, just to save on shipping.

It's easy to fill 7-8 trays with large fruit like apples peaches. We have apple and peach trees.

I think square trays like the Excalibur do have less wasted space than the round ones. If I were to need another, I probably would still buy the nesco if the price were the same vs 200 or more for the Excalibur.

Dehydrators and vacuum sealers go hand in hand.

    My favorites
    Peaches
    Bananas
Jerky made with London broil and taco seasoning.
    Chilli beans.

Oranges and watermelon don't do well.

Thanks again folks Much appreciated! How do you guys store your dehydrated food? I don't have the cash for a vacuum sealer yet. I was planning on using ziplock baggies...and storing in the freezer...

and Jerky made with Taco seasoning...mmm sounds good!

Save up for a vacuum sealer. Until then use ziplocks and suck air out with a straw.
Then store those in the freezer in a dark bag..like a brown grocery bag.
