Thanks for the update Deadeye.. As for the ice, caution is definitely in order and I've already packed the picks.

Snowmobilers! They seem to be everywhere! It looks like the price of peace and quiet is a chance at ice-fishing. Unless something else turns up that's skidoo-free, fishy and accessible, Algonquin looks like our destination. Does your friend have any other suggestions?

I hope there will be ebough snow and cold temps on this trip. I may need to just bring a pack because there won't be enough snow to pull a pulk.
Warm temps would really be a drag. The big question is how much tolerance we have with repect to the weather given that winter camping during a thaw could be a study in wet and slushy.

One good weekend of rain could put a dent in that, although the 14-day trend for Huntsville show sub-zero weather up to the 14th.

I have been looking at a map of the park, and have a question.

About how far south along Whitefish lake are we thinking of heading? Curious as I am planning a bit of a day hike and our campsite location might alter it a bit.

Here is a picture of the route and destination that was suggested to me at the Valens hang the first weekend in January. It's about 2.5km or so from the parking lot at Kearney Lake. The yellow 'X' marks the spot.

More ground dwellers than hangers. Good thing it's not called a hang in the title of the thread.

Do remember, that in winter back country camping is not permitted in the summer sites, so the availability of wood will not be an issue. There will be more than enough blow downs and standing dead wood to use. Just look at the last post, we are surrounds by forest on both sides of the trail.

    Cheers

It would make sense to check the weather and winds just before the trip and plan accordingly, but I think we should consider going a bit further southeast of the proposed site to the other side of the penninsula and try to make camp on the northwest shore of Whitefish lake. As I mentioned before, camps on south shores will generally receive less sunlight and are more exposed to the prevailing winds, making then feel a fair bit colder. This applies even more so in the winter then it does in the summer.

As for wood, we shouldn't have a problem. With so many people, if everybody went out each day and got a toboggan-load of group wood, then we'd likely have no problems keeping a roaring communal fire going.

BTW Bubba, it's called the "Eastern Great Lakes Hang - Snowshoes Across Algonquin", so we can hang with pride!!!

I was wondering if anybody had a cauldron or large hanging pot we can use over the fire? I have a couple but they don't have a bail.

Also, does anybody have any old cross country ski wax. I was thinking of prepping my wood toboggan.
