Eastern Great Lakes Hang - Winter 2012: Feb 18-20 - Snowshoes across Algonquin

    Happy New Year

If the Eastern Great Lakes "Gearing up for Winter" - Jan 7, 2012: Valens hang was a chance for over a dozen hearty souls to fine tune their cold-weather rigs, then "Snowshoes across Algonquin" will be a chance to get out into the great outdoors and put those skills to practice.

The basic plan will be to take advantage of Algonquin's network of winter trails to snowshoe and/or ski a short way into the park and set up a proper winter bush camp for two nights. Algonquin's winter regulations prohibit fishing but permit camping virtually anywhere but established sites, so the Park's wide open. Ideas for an alternate location where we can set up camp just outside of the Park and throw in some ice-fishing would be welcome.

When: February 18, 19 and 20th 2012 (Can be pushed out one week if necessary)

Where: Algonquin Park Highway 60 Corridor: Exact location TBD

Well I'm definitely going to do my best to make it there. Last week I would have been an instant yes but as some of you know the reasons for my bailing out on the "Gearing up for winter hang" has changed my situation a bit. That is a good weekend for me because I have a Stat holiday on the Monday. I hope there will be enough snow.

Yeah I agree. We're lucky to have such a fantastic photographer and gearhound in [o]TTer. He's also very adept at generating kindling.

    Greetings All

I am in for this hang. This is the one I've been gearing up for since last winter.

I've built myself a roll up toboggan to accommodate the canvas condo and woodstove. So I have 2 of the Pelican™Snow Trek 45 Utility Sleds that have been outfitted with basic tie downs that I can loan out/sell (cheap) to anyone that wants one. I won't be able to haul them to Algonquin as I won't have room in my car for them.

    Cheers

    Brian

Flattery...as if my ego wasn't out of control already!! Fine kindling is merely the byproduct of whittling toothpicks out of logs, it’s amazing the lengths we'll go to when we need a toothpick, or maybe that’s just me

As for a location in Algonquin Park. I will throw out the recommendation of the Mike's that we met at Valens. That is the Old Railway Bike Trail with access via the Pog Lake Camground. I like that it is a relatively flat trail with only a couple of hills to contend with. Looking at the Google Maps of the area, the Old Railway Bike trail is pretty close to the Madawaska River and after a short distance hits the top end of Whitefish Lake and is about a 2km trek in (roughly).

    Cheers

I do want to go to this... But I think that I'm out of vacation until MAHHA... Those Fridays sure do go though the vacation time quick.

I'll look into it but I think i'm shot for anything not encompassed by a weekend.

Is the date set for sure? I have to let my boss know so she'll approve my leave. Oh, and I also have to take the time off at work.

Brian, I did the Highland Trail last year dragging a toboggan with my hot tent, stove and gear. The hills nearly killed me. On the way back, I came across that bike trail. I took it back to the Mew Lake campground. So the bike rail is definitely a good idea. It is fairly flat and will take us back as far as we want. It's a good trail.
