    Speer Hammock Expensive

I am waiting on Zippers, after which I am planning to make a new hammock with bugnet. Why is the Speer hammock so much more than an ENO or even a Claytor. The hammock alone is $100 or of made with Supplex, $150. I know how good Speer quality is from owning a Snugfit, but.......
    Please enlighten me. Mule

I'm sure that the differential in labor costs is a significant factor. The point is that the total cost is more than just materials.

I bought a Speer simply because I wanted a "guest bedroom" and I considered it to be an absolute bargain at only $100. The materials are flawless, the workmanship is impecable, and the service is beyond reproach. I'm happy to pay a fair price for a quality product made in America. Beyond that, Ed Speer is a quality human who has gone well above and beyond the call of duty to promote and support our recreation activity and we should be happy to pay twice the price just to keep him in the game.

I second that: I went to Speer from Henessey because of the quality and it's made in America. Plus Ed Speer isn't threatened by DIY's like Tom H appears to be.

Yes, I would say the primary dif is "made in America" combined with the very small scale of manufacturing.

For example, I imagine contracting for someone to sew his hammocks in Thailand would allow Ed to be much more competitive with TC $45 No Net hammock. Way more competitive. While at the same time, Tom Claytor ( as much as I liker his hammocks ) never has answered ( yet ) my e-mail of many weeks ago where I asked him questions about about the webbing. Compared to Ed always quickly answering my e-mails and/or always being available for answering any number of questions by telephone. All of that has to add to cost.

I like what I am hearing, thanks. Do you think the bugnet is sufficient. I may buy one of his hammocks. I weigh about 210, so I may buy the $150.00 Supplex model if I do. What are your comments on the two models. I really appreciate your insight. Mule

i don't like supplex for a hammock, you kinda stick to it, making it hard to slide around to adjust your position, definately not as comfortable as 1.9 ripstop. i would go with that if you think you can.

In addition to being made in the USA rather than w/ cheap labor from elsewhere, there is velcro nicely sewn down both sides of the hammock & also the bug net.
The soft velcro on the hammock sides is not only for the bug net, but gives the snugfit a tight seal.
And it could also be used for hanging pockets & stuff on the side of the hammock if a person wanted to<G>.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

How do you like the bugnet? I am used to a Claytor's cavernous space.

I've only slept in one w/ the bug net once or twice, but it seamed fairly spacious.
I don't suppose you could make it to Hot Springs for the June 6-8 SEHHA campout?
Ed would probably be glad to let you try one out for one or both nights.
That would be the best way to see if it fits your style.
