Lightbulb Rectangle sleeping bag to pea pod convert

Ok so I bought my sewing machine yesterday and my bag is here now to chop it up. The way I'm thinking about doing this is basically just above the zipper sewing 2" rectangle the width of the bag then cutting the middle of it open and sew velcro to each of the loose pieces.

Like that so I can get it nice and tight to the hammock and still use the bag if I go tent camping with my wife.

I'm new to the sewing machine so I was hoping you guys/gals might be able to give me some pointers or even if you have a better idea of how to achieve similar results.

Ya I seen his convert but I was thinking of doing the velcro so it could be a tighter fit on the hammock.

I think I understand your diagram up there. Is it a rectangular sleeping bag that is oriented just like it would be on the ground, zipper is on the side with hammock running thru where a person would normally be? Is the velcro hole toward the r/h side of center a head hole/ breathing hole.

The potential problem is see here is how you will cinch it up around the ends. If there is a drawstring channel in each of your endcaps that may help, but I don't know for sure.
    Good luck,

Oh ya i forgot to put that on my drawing... Ya I was figuring on putting shoc cord on the end caps. The hole in the center is a head/breathing hole
