    Staying warm

I just bought the foot end of the z-liner. I bought 3 pillows from wal-mart and cut them in half to stow in the pockets on my NX-250. Has anyone tried the pillow thing ? Did it work ? If I put reflectix on the z-liner foot will I see a difference or is it wasted weight and effort ?

Thanks for any help or insight.

I like the pillow idea . . . had thought of it but didn't do it.
I figure it would be awesome.

Adding the reflectix is a good idea . . .
but would add an axtra layer of what ever, for colder weather.
    I would think.
I know you will let us know how it goes.

    Update

I did a little experimenting today. Standard size hollowfill pillows ($2 at wal mart) fit just about right in the Clark pockets. They snug right up to each other leaving no gaps. Looked like it would be very effective at low temps but prob overkill in the 40's & 50's. I did cut a couple in half and they opened the pockets up nicely for dead air space but left some gaps so as hopefully not to bake me like a biscuit.

This is pretty bulky and only suitable for car camping but I think it will work real well. Going camping with the scouts this weekend and hopefully it will be cold enough to put it to the test. If so I will report back here.

I just came back from a weekend in the woods. I tried the pillows in the pockets. Unfortunately since the temp never dropped below the low 40's it wasn't the best test. That being said, I did get a little too warm and had to open up the weather shield a little at the head end. Even though it was warmer than I hoped I believe it will work pretty well.

I am very interested in this pillow business. I have a NX250 on the way and am looking for a cheap fix, at least short-term, so that I can get in a bit of hang time soon, so anything else you learn, please pass it on.

I've suggested this before in this forum.

Everyone operates with different aspirations and different constraints.
Walmart's cheapest pillows are sometimes on sale for $2.50 instead of a regular price of $5. That's all polyster, batting and cover.

The L X W of 4 of them is perfect for the Clark. Arguably, two are a bit undersized for the pair of larger Clark pockets.

IMO, they are all overstuffed for this repurposing, with about 4" of uncompressed loft/spring; where there is room in the pockets, due to the pleats for perhaps 2.5". So, If you are willing to open the pillows, you can reduce the batts. Alternatively, on the cheap and easy, you might find all-polyester pillow cases at a $ store.....for $1 and cannibalize 2-3 of the pillows.

Or just overstuff, and let body weight compress the batts, as your head would if you were using the pillows as pillows.

To be clear: This is all proof of concept, bulky, and on the cheap. The batting is relatively coarse, so I am sure it does not have close to maximum insulating value of quality batting.

But, then, I've described a $15 total expenditure.

I found $2 cheap pillows over here at Ikea. Remembered this thread and Demostix's comments about pillows, and decided to throw caution to the wind (and 12 bucks) and go ahead and try this. The pillows were rolled tightly and compressed in plastic into little hotdogs. Problem was, when the plastic hotdog skin was oppened, the pillow pops up to a pretty good size. They stuff EXTREMELY well into the Clark (mine is the NX-250), and worked unbelievably well! Temps during my trial were in the low 40's/upper 30's. I would have been plenty warm into the 20's or less. Feet got cold though, but threw in a small CCF with reflective surface, and viola! Warm!! Probably too warm. I was in a lightweight t-shirt and jeans (in my back yard). I think if the insulation was cut in half, and sewn into a lightweight nylon material, they would be awesome. Just too much to carry if your packing it all in on your back!!!

Do you remember what the name of the pillow was?

Well I like the pillow idea, but don't find it practical. I mean the zliner is already bulky, but 6 pillows? Just wouldn't fit in my backpack or kayak. And if then nothing else..?
I do understand that it is the cheap fix, but for me it is not workable. I think somebody needs to make down zliners and sell them...
