Every now and again I find I'd like to get in instant email notification of a thread with out just adding a worthless post to be able to do it.
So I just want to follow a thread but may have nothing worth while to add to it.
Can this be done?

Yes, it can.
At the top of every thread is a 'thread tools' dropdown menu. From that menu, select 'Subscribe to this thead' from the list. That subscription will then follow the subscription behavior you have set in your User CP.
