Ha.. Southern fan didn't get enough sleep last night and over looked the word "Whoopie" in the OP. I thought we were talking about regular ole soft shackles.

It's been a long day and I should prolly go get in bed, but now my mind is wheeling around how to make a soft shackle Whoopie work....

    And sorry about the confusion.

I just finished a double ridgeline for my tarp. I went with the UCR method. I only have 6 inches of bury and it holds just fine under tension.

When i first read this post, I thought you were talking about the fixed eye too and it sounded intriguing. However, the more I thought about it, I like the KISS methodology (keep it simple stupid) and you can't get much simpler than a fixed eye that can be larksheaded onto anything (or to which you can larkshead anything, including a continuous loop).
Well after I thought about it and read the responses I did just end up doing a fixed eye on the end but I made it 30ft long, I think that's a bit too long.

I also gotta get some shoc cord from some where.

I think the issue with having the adjustable eye of the whoopie sling around the tree would be that once you gave it more slack to extend the length, you'd have less rope making contact with the tree itself and therefore, it may lose grip. I can see it working just fine if the adjustable eye around the tree was used just to make adjustments for different sized trees, but then you'd still need another way on the other end of the rope to adjust the tautness of tarp/distance from tree.

From looking at your pics, that's about the amount of tension I got, and I like a lot more tension than that, on my tarp ridgeline. I thought about doing a whoopie on one end of the tarp and maybe a nite-ize Figure 9 on the other. Instead I just went to a continual ridgeline with knot bone on one end, and Figure 9 on the other, which allows me to get the tension I want.

I just found whoopies very hard to tension up. I found myself holding the ridgeline in my teeth so I could have both hands free to work the adjustable loop.

I know exactly what you're talking about. It's hard to grip the zing-it with your hands when you're trying to pull it tight. My previous ridgeline was a continual from AHE. I had a little more trouble with that one due to the prussik knots for kind of the same reason. I just couldn't get the right leverage with it. But it seems that with every ridgeline I've used, i get as tight as i possibly can, but once I stake it the corners down, the tarp always bows in the middle. I can never get that perfectly straight ridgeline like I always see in shug's videos. Maybe I'm staking my tarp out too tightly? Maybe it's just my tarp?

I use a sliding toggle for 1 end with a fixed eye (adjustable for any size tree/wood stud, etc. The other side is tightened with the line around a prussic knot loop and multiple half hitches.
A soft shackle could be used on the prussic loop if the ridgeline had multiple loops towards the end for adjustability in it. The multiple loops hanging loose then could be used as a ratail line to hang equipment.

    Hmmmmm, another project to try.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
