    Hardware-free hammock

I've been giving some thought to making a hardware-free ultralight hammock. I guess my thought is to keep it as light as possible and to avoid using clips, rings, carabiners and hooks. I also want to use amsteel through the channel of the hammock and to avoid having to tie unnecessary knots or carry extra cord (I've seen some guys use more weight in rope than others use on carabiners).

I envision using webbing around the tree, whoopies through the webbing loop and some sort of soft shackle to attach the whoopie to the hammock.

Anybody done this or have a recommendation on the hammock to whoopie attachment?

    Thanks!

Sew channels in the hammock and run the ends of the Whoopies through the channels. What you are proposing is basically what I do for my Ghost hammock. That said, I have added in a couple of Dutchware items in places lately.

If you make your own whoopies you can build them directly into the channel. Another option is that you can put a continuous loop through the channel and larkshead the whoopie to that.

What's wrong with simply larks heading the fixed loop of the whoopee through the hammock channel, that's how my dd is rigged, I then personally use carabiners to attach the variable loop to my tree slings as these act as drip rings. (and also give me somewhere to hang my lantern)
You could always larks head or cats paw this directly to the sling and tie round the tree with a water knot (3 wraps pull 2 is one of the strongest but needs long straps)

    Great video

Great ideas SGT Rock. Great video. I also appreciate the idea to build the whoopies into the channel (fewer pieces and simple is always better). My original thought was a continuous loop larksheaded through the channel, but I think whoopies are even better.

And thanks to SGT Rock, I'm gonna make some UCRs. Those look cool.

    Thanks all for the feedback.

FWIW It may be cool to make the hammock and whoopies all one piece, but I have found it is nice to be able to take them apart at times. You might go with the larks head idea.

The only issue with building g the whoopsie in versus just larks heading them into the channel (skip adding a loop, it serves no purpose without any hardware in between) is that should you ever want to wash your hammock you will also need to wash your suspension. Not huge until you ponder how much amsteel bleeds its dye.

Larksheading the whoopie directly to the hammock is a good idea as well. I don't like to do this though because if I want to swap the whoopie out (i.e. to a different hammock or for a different color) then there is no longer a cord in the channel. Not a big deal but personally I don't like threading channels.

I didn't think about washing a hammock and the bleeding dyes This is a very good point and I will no longer suggest that people build whoopies into the hammock because of this reason.

Tie a string to your whoopie before you take it out of the channel and it will aid in inserting the next whoopie.
Look up before you hook up!!
