    I voted for length.

I think there is a point were additional width does not add comfort as far as a flat lay is concerned. Probably around 60" or less. My reasoning is that additional width takes on the banana shape and doesn't allow an increase in the diagonal lay angle. It does aid in keeping quilts from spilling over the side. This is only my thoughts based on minimal testing.

Length is really important, but that is the width that allows to lay in diagonal in your hammock, and so enjoy the best nap!

Since I mostly make my own, I can play around with length and longer is more comfortable for me.

But that needs to be put in perspective, once you find a length that's good for you, there's not much, if any, benefit to going beyond that.

[QUOTE=BillyBob58;636142]OK now, that's interesting. I did not know that. Though I am aware of the technical difs in the two ( a channel vs a knot) I have long ago just considered them more or less the same thing as far as function. However, now that you mention it, my Claytor is only 10 ft long ( actually not quite as long as my UL Explorer which I just measured and is about 10'4"), but it is one of my top comfort hammocks. Even though it is 1.5 ft shorter than my Explorer, there is not a huge comfort dif.

So, looks like one of the comfort variables is channel vs knot?

I wonder why it would make any difference, considering the Claytor cinchs down real tight on the ends once you are in it, ending up about like my Speer is even before getting in. But if it does make a dif ( ie: knot vs channel), that is even more incentive for me to try that shorter Claytor my friend has and see how it feels.

My first DIY is a cinched and 2nd I used at the Floridahang is gathered. They both have the whoopie larkshead located inside the cinchknot. Basically making them both equal in starting point from gather knot to center of hammock. Same material(from same bolt), width and hanging equipment. The difference is gathered is longer and is more comfy. I believe that its due from having more material to spread out from where the feet and head are in relation to the distance from the gather in the 2 hammocks.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
