2.8 oz. Plain Weave Nylon Hammock

Decided to try the 2.8 oz. Plain Weave Nylon that Backwoods Daydreamer carries. Being a bigger guy (6'1" 250 ish), I wanted to make a single layer gathered end hammock with Knotty's stretch sides. I started at a 10'6" length, but after trying it, it didn't feel right. So I cut it down 6" - still didn't feel right - another 6 inches and "perfect"! Super comfy and flat. I really like this material - has a smooth side and a rough side. It weighs in at 15.4 oz with suspension.

Looks great! Interesting fabric. I've made hammocks from all of Scott's materials except this one. I guess I'll have to give this one a go, too since yours came out so nice.

For me, comfort in the long hammocks is found in a very long ridge line - 87% of the hammock length.

Thanks MAD777! I was expecting a really heavy material. In one of my pics you can see my fingers thru it. One side is silky feeling and the other feels rough. I put the rough side as the inside of the hammock. This material repels water but seems to breath really well - I've only spent a few hours in it but experience little to no stretching.
I made my ridge line 100 inches. It's just right! I started with 102 and ended with a final 100". The hammock is 9' 6 inches long - so my ridge line is a little longer than 87%. I tried it shorter, but it didn't feel comfortable.
My neighbor wants this hammock (he say's it's more comfortable than his bed-another convert), so I'll build another out of the same material.
I really like the color - sort of a grayish green. The picture on Scotts site doesn't do it justice.

I'm a little surprised by the lengths you settled in on but it just goes to show how different things work for different people.

That's a nice looking stretch-side you made there. Scott's 2.8oz fabric may be a great option for anyone not feeling safe in the usual 1.9oz stuff. Thanks for the report.

Thanks, Knotty. I too thought it was strange dimension wise. I thought I would have a flatter lay with a longer hammock, i.e. 10 ft., but for some reason 9' 6" was the most comfortable length. Going back and forth 3 times to shorten it with the sewing machine made it a little frustrating.
I just double checked all the measurements in case I made a mistake, but they're the same as posted. I wonder if the width (56 inches) has anything to do with it. I'm going to sleep in it tonight for the first time, so we'll see!

Thanks, Yukon! As Knotty says, all people are different. I am very happy with the lay of this hammock. Total cost minus shipping and labor is about $22.00. I'm really happy with that! Knotty's stretch side works great. I'm going to apply it to my BB asap.

When you say "BB", I assume it's a Traveler that you'll be modifying into a stretch-side? People have asked about doing that but not sure if anyone's actually done it yet.
