I finished my hammock. It's 11.5' long and about 58" wide. It's based on Risk's Z-hammock. I think I'm getting the hang of the sag thing. It works well with a blue pad. I had tried my version of the Speer's segmented pad extender in between the layers but it was slick enough that it moved around to much. I used just the pad and it worked much better. I whipped the ends and it worked well. Now all I need is a tarp and bugnet!

Okay, I've got some pics loaded up.
First, here is my new double hanging in the front yard. You can just see the corner of the blue wally world pad sticking out of the upper left corner.
Next is the detail of the whipping and attachment. Yes, for all those wondering about making one, it does work! Just be gentle the first time you get in it to let things shift.
Finally, the is the position that I find to be "flat".
After playing around I did find that the pad has enough "stick" that it changes the way the hammock drapes. If you look at the third picture you'll see a bunch of loose fabric to the right of my feet. When I take the pad out, this dissappears. Interesting! Anyhow, I wanted to try a couple of things with this build.
1. My ENO double nest didn't seem to "fit". I thought that the problem was the length of the overall hammock not giving me enough room to spread out. The double nest is a little under 9". THis one is 11.5' and the comfort and ability to get flat is much better. Side sleeping is not a problem at all. (Several naps are proof enough for me.)
2. The pad in the double eagle was not to my liking. I made a Speer's type segmented pad extender. This helped but it was still not what I wanted. What I have now will function but I will be working on an underquilt. If I can get bare "non-pad" comfort and warmth, I'll be in heaven.
So far it's been a great adventure. One of the best side benefits is that I got my mom's old sewing machine out, up and running and made something on it. On top of that I even taught my son to sew a seam or two. He made a sleeping bag storage sack. (Here he is, sewing away!)
A couple of dollars of $1.00 fabric (8 yards for hammock, 2 yards for sleeping bag sacks) and some good times!

I recently made one from the walmart $1 polyester, and it is VERY soft and comfortable.

The hammock is made from a greenish-grey 1.9 oz DWR ripstop that I scored at a Kentucky Wal-mart. When we went on Xmas vacation we stopped at about a dozen Wal-marts between SC and IL. Kentucky was the only place where they had any 60" wide stuff.Originally Posted by ozarkjeep
