Where do you stash gear during the day?

So I know what to do with my gear when I'm sleeping, but what if I go on an excursion - and I'm leaving my hammock and what not back at camp?

What do I do with my setup when I'm gone - just looking for what everyone else does...

    Thanks!

I have not had any issues with leaving my gear for excursions. Seems you only hear of gear getting "borrowed with no intent to return" at large campgrounds and larger festivals.

I follow two schools of thought: if someone I know is staying in the base camp, I leave stuff up and laying about; if not, I take the large "contractor weight" garbage back out of my pack and all my stuff (except what I am carrying for the day) goes back into my pack. I then walk a short distance from camp, note carefully my surroundings and/or leave myself a sign that I can't miss...go off the trail on a compass heading for 75-150', put my pack in the black garbage bag, seal it up good...and cover the bag almost completely with leaves.

The reason you don't want to cover the bag completely...is you may not be able to find it in low light or the dark.

I put it in my hammock and cover it with my TQ and made it look like someone is sleeping in it. try getting creative with your sleeping beanie & a stuff sack.

Unless its a group hang and someone is staying at camp. It all goes with me. My thoughts are I would rather pack it than replace it, I have also found some awesome camp sites on a short look see too.

Put all that "extra stuff" in the For Sale thread. If you don't hike wit' it, ya don't need it!

I had a very bad experience about 9 or 10 years ago. I had nice gear, really nice. I left my gear in my tent and went for a dayhike with just the essentials. My camp was probably 10 miles at least from the nearest road. I came back to camp about 6 hours later and all of my gear was gone. Though they were 'kind' enough to leave me their cheaper gear in exchange.

Never again do i leave gear at camp unless i am just going to fetch water, etc or a task that only takes a short time. If I am leaving camp for a length of time it all goes with me. I always thought gear was fairly safe in the backcountry, but alas it isn't always.
