    ignition problems

Me and my buddy went out last night for an overnighter close to home at Miquelon Lake. Temps got down around -7c (19f) last night and it was about -10c (14f) this morning. We found a great spot at the boat launch, skies were clear and the moon was bright, almost too bright to really appreciate the stars.
It was my first time using doors (although I only used on one end). It was his first real winter hang, my second.
We had a real issue trying to get our stoves lit. I had a diy sort of fancee feast and a smokeeater908 mini and he had an Evernew Appalachian ti set. We tried both methyl hydrate and Heet but really had to work hard to get them lit. We tried a flint, a lighter and a small mini torch. A few hours earlier we had no problem getting fired up for coffee and it was probably about 0c (32f).
Obviously the temperature plays a role in igniting fuel.
By the way, that Evernew set was awesome. Once we got the stove going, it boiled 2 cups in about 3 minutes and he had 2 boils done before I even had any sign of boiling.

Looks like a great trip HK! I've noticed my stoves are a little harder to light in colder conditions as well. I find the Fancee Feast or DIY Supercat to light the easiest.

    Cheers

Looks like you guys had fun. I love the sunset shot! What kind of boots/muck-lucks were you wearing in the 4th pic?
For your stove it helps to keep your fuel in your pocket to keep it warm. The colder it is the more fuel you'll have to use too. But generally I use a wood burning stove in extreme cold and only fire up my alky stove from my hammock for quick morning coffee.

Are you warming the alcohol in your pocket? That's worked for me in cold weather. I even put the stove in my pocket to warm it up before I fire up that bad boy.

Thats my buddy Bill. There an old pair of military type boots that he pieced together.
One interesting point is both our boots froze through the night. I guess the accumulated moisture from walking around and sweating soaked into the felt liners causing them to freeze and making it very tough to get into them in the morning. The things you learn along the way!!

Oh, That happened to me on my first cold hang too! I now put chem warmers in them and cram a stuff sack in the top of the boots. Frozen boots are painful!

Great images and opportunity for gear testing.
When we take Scouts to Winter Camp, we encourage all to bring remove-able liner boots as your bodies produce a lot of moisture and single layer boots will freeze overnight. They are taught to remove the liners of their boots to be put in between the two sleeping bags they provide. This as well as, changing into all clean or unworn clothes stops them from being cold at night.
I use my hammock when the Scouts and other leaders are in the tents on the snow. To keep my removed boot liners warm, I put them on my feet under the upside down TQ/sleeping bag. This allows me a quick access to a loose pair of boots for use in the night for a relief walk.

this.. cold alcohol doesn't vapor much, which is what ignites.
